1917 enfield question
« on: February 19, 2007, 04:14:24 PM »
i have a remington enfield that is still in military configuration. shoots very well, but on closer examination the barrel does not look right.  it has the flaming bomb up by the sight but no date.  also it is 2 groove and i thought all modle 17's were 4 groove. The barrel is correct length when compared to my other 17.  but not much of a finish on it. I have not removed wood to see if any other oddities yet.  does any one know what the lack of a date and 2 grooves mean. thanks in advance.

Might be of older manufacture.  How far apart are the serial numbers?  When you disassemble it there should be a date stamp on the bottom of the barrel.  That should help.  Mikey.

mtbugle,
The original barrels, were, I believe, 5 groove. No matter, this is a rebarrel. I have seen other 2 groove rebarrels without date markings. I am fairly certain the 2 groove barrels were from WWII arsenal refurbishment.

you are right, my bad on the 5 groove rifling. i took the stock off my other enfield (winchester) and do not see the date under the barrel. it does however have the date and w up by the flaming bomb.  also bunch of british proof marks top of chamber area. this one is one my dad sporteried slightly as a younster and has always been a great shooter.

I have been looking up the markings for my rifle and I came across the flaming bomb marking. It denotes the US lend lease program if I remember right. Hope this helps.

The fire bomb/flaming Bomb is a US military acceptance mark. It was not just on rifles,
my bayonets have it too.

the 1917 were made with both rifleing i had two enfields i got from dcm and both were 2 groove.made for ww1.most soldiers carried enfields not springfields.the two groove guns were excelent for cast bullets.we supplyed britain with 800,000 enfields under lend lease.they used them for sniping.
