9mm?
« on: January 21, 2007, 05:16:30 PM »
Ok guys lets hear what you think about 9mm for predator hunting. I like calling in thick cover and shots out to 50 to 60 yards.
I have shot 2 yotes and both got away :-[  yes i was using fmj, So sould i put the 9mm up or try hollow points?

I would put it away i've seen chipmunks take a round  from a 9MM in the chest and still continue to charge.

Hollowpoints and good shot placement.....if a 9mm HP can't kill a coyote, then they better stop selling them for self-defense.  People are a lot bigger than coyotes.  Besides, if people kill coyotes with a .17 HMR and hollowpoints..........

People may be bigger then coyotes, but a coyote has a whole bunch more heart. Times change I guess, that rifle looks more like a gangbanger rifle? Never seen a predator hunting rifle like that before.

twocan,

One thing you need to remember, If you blow a shot with what ever you are shooting the chances of ever getting another shot at that critter is near nil. I would rather see you buy a good Varmint rifle and get used to it and get to where you can popem the firs shot,, You will get a lot more satisfaction out of your hunting varmints by doing this. Thats my opinion. Good luck sir.......Joe......

I allways in the past have used a 12 gage. But i have had to let a lot of bobcats go because they just would not come in more than 50 yds. So what is a good 100yrd and under (gun) or (round) with little fur damage? Maybe a good 223 over a 12? I may have just talked my self into another gun ;D

You could use one of those for sure.  The Savage 24F Predator comes to mind.  A friend as an old 24F with .222 over 20 gauge, and has a 4x scope or a red-dot that he puts on it.  Zero's the .222 to the scope, and the shotgun barrel is good to about 25 yds with it like that.  I killed a crow at 175 yds last year with it and the 4x.  It seems to shoot well enough.

I sure would think that a handy little carbine like that with expanding bullets ought to work. You said you hunt heavy cover. I have killed a few dogs with an M1 Carbine. I don't see how a good 9mm hollowpoint wouldn't work.

Yea the 9 minimeter should kill yotes as long as you can get them within 100yds! Even in a carbine it isn't much better then a 22 mag.  Now if you step up to a lever in 44mag/45 LC 30-30 or get a bolt gun in the many varmit calibers!

  That is an ugly stock..LOL..but ATI has a nice looking with a laser mount that is slick looking..  www.atigunstocks.com/

      According to my Grandson and his fellow Iraq veteran Marines..the 9mm in FMJ from their Beretta is not a "stopper". They think HPs would help, but of course they cannot be used.

  That is why the Marines are looking to replace the 9mm with the .45...as id the Army; possibly, the Kimber warrior.

   I would think that 9mm HPs from a rifle would do the job..and that laser mount could be a real boon for close in and/or night time hunting..

So what do the Marines do better the the Army?........ Varmint hunt? Forget the marines here, we are talking predator & varmint hunting. A 9mm is a peace of JUNK, only a little better then a 38. It was NEVER ment for predator hunting, only close range people hunting during WWII.  We had something way better back then called a 45.
It's all about knock down power and a 9mm ain't got it. If you want to be a predator hunter use the right rifle caliber for the job...... .17, 221, 222, 223, 224, 22-250, 220 swift, 243, 25-06 etc. That's my opinion lol. ;)

I use a 22 Hornet for most of my predator calling, especially at night. It's light, handy, cheap to reload, and has plenty of killing power at normal calling ranges. It's also easier on hides than the faster/bigger calibers.

I've thought seriously about building a 9MM semi-auto rifle(scoped) for foxes, but I've never done it yet specifically because I know it'd be a little to weak for coyotes. Around here, you're just as likely to call in a coyote on a fox stand, and I'd feel undergunned with the 9MM.

On the other hand, I've used a 357 rifle(perfect for daytime calling), and it's a dream on a calling stand. I shot mostly 38 Specials out of my last 357 rifle, and I can say for sure that the 38's from a rifle are plenty strong enough for coyotes on a stand.

  Hey onecoyote..who rattled your chain ?

       First place, I am an Army vet so I have no prejudices between those two..

   Second place, in speaking about using a 9mm for predators, we are speaking about relative stopping power; so I offered an opinion by folks that are regularly dusting 150-200 lb varmints...and occasionally using the 9mm to do so..sometimes first hand experience is valuable..

   So, kindly just reach down and remove that burr from under your saddle..OK ?

Ironglow,  I gave my opinion, is that not a right in the U.S.?. I happen to have spent a few years in the Army myself....Jan 62/Oct 64 ...So what?
Predator hunting and hunting people is two different games. A 9mm is a pice of junk when it comes to predator hunting, that's my opinion OK!!!! Damn lol. It's ok to disagree my friend.
What the heck are you talking about 150lb/200 lb  predators? You shoot em with a 9mm and I'll shoot em with a 243. I win lol. ;D

Onecoyote;

                  ...Sure enough friend; let's have fun on this site..huntin', shootin' and outdoors..the joys of life !

    BTW: You're right about the 223 being better on predators..Those Marines I talked about..when rooting terrorists out at close quarters, actually preferred the SAW gun (223) or the Mossy 500..LOL

                                                                                         ..regards..Ironglow

  Jery;
  Are your Hornet and .357 mag Both NEFs ? I was planning on another barrel or two for calling..even thought of the .357 as a barrel for both predators and deer ...sound logical ?

   Yes; the .357 maxi may be a bit better for deer..but then a bit much for yotes..and I would rather stay with purely standard calibers.

No. My 22 Hornet is a Rugger 77, and my 357 rifle is a Marlin 1894C lever action. I've shot both calibers in the Handi Rifles though, and they're absolutely great little guns. Every single Handi Rifle I've shot(a bunch of them) has been plenty accurate, and utterly dependable.
