M-48A Rechamber
« on: March 01, 2007, 02:54:25 AM »
I have a couple of M-48A's and want to sportize one of them.  If I remember right the action is a little shorter than the 98 so can it be rechambered in 8mm-06 since the 06 case is 2.484 long and the 8mm rounds case is 2.240?

Thanks,

Turk

I'm brain blinking just now but the simple answer is that the mauser can be safely made to take anything(almost) that'll fit in the magazine.. Measure the magazine, if the rounds fit your OK.. otherwise there will be length issues.. While the mag can be lengthened some there is a limit. Remember the feed ramp must catch the round as it exits the mag and it's the back of the lower locking lug abutment. Don't want to remove much,, if any!

O.K. the Mauser 8mm is 57 mm long. The '06 is, metric, 7.62 x 63 as I recall. POINT: If you insist on loading 220 grain bullets out to touch the rifling in a standard chamber... Magazine is too short. If you  are willing to load more common loads and be happy even if you have to deep seat a bullet now and again, no problem. Some 98's were coverted after WW II for allies and in the Belgium production there was a shallow groove cut in the rear of the front receiver ring so that you could extract unfired military 172 grain boat tail loads without hanging up on the front receiver ring... This is really splitting hairs. No reason you should not go for it. Great rifle if you want and budget permits custom. Mark X at wholesale was always cheaper after all the work was done, but that was "off the rack" factory... Your bucks. Luck. Happy trails.

I just wonder what a person could do with an 8MM-06 that couldn't be done with an 8X57? Other than spend way more on dies, loaded ammo, etc.
