They could be but the magazine is pretty cartridge specific and would require extensive modification to feed.

Yes I see that as a problem, But seeing as they are just sheet metal could you basically make a new one, The reciever looks like it would require rework also to feed the round, It dosn't look simple but I think it would be fun to try. 8)

An M38 carbine would be a real thumper to shoot I would bet.

A friend of mine (and a BIG fan of Mosins) made up a 45-70 one.  He couldn't get it to feed reliably if more than two rounds loaded.  Waited till they were lined up and took two hogs w/ one shot.  Loaded it hot.

If your looking for a cheap 45/70  it may be cheaper to buy a NEF single shot than it would to convert a mosin though the mosin would be more unique.

Good suggestion jh45 but I already have two of those, ;D  I just think there should be something good to do with all those cheap M44s 8)

Maybe , I think alot of chamberings would work you know and I may try one but doggoneit I like .45-70s. ;D

Bob,

A gunsmith friend of mine, many years ago, began converting some old military rifles to 45-70.  He was doing this on contract for a company that I can't recall anymore.  The rifle that he was converting was the SMLE.  If my memory is correct he could only get 2 or 3 rounds to work in the magazine.

If your heart is set on a 45-70 bolt rifle you might give the SMLE a look.  I've also heard that some old large ring mausers were converted to 45-70....but I think you would have more problems with the magazine that the SMLE.

I think the Enfield type rifles are a better platform for a 45/70 and just as cheap. They were comercially made by the Gibbs co..  Thats the direction I would go.

 I have that same interest and I bought a M38 for $80 to toy around with the idea...I also bought a Siamese Mauser to send to ER Shaw as they specialize in doing that action in 45-70...I also am thinking that the M95 Austrian 8x56 would work as it is a really large rimmed case and a straight pull bolt...It actually cycles faster than a K31 Swiss...I believe you would have to keep the pressures down on that one a bit though...Maybe not, the 8x56 is a pretty powerful round...

 Well I got the M38 in my hands today and discovered that it would indeed take some opening the width of the magazine to even get the cartridge into it and the receiver would need to be modified as well..My vote is a nogo unless you have plenty of $$ to burn on doing a project just for the sake of doing it...The rim of the 45-70 case is also a larger diameter than the bolt face on the Mosin...

GIBBS rifle co would be your best bet and the enfield the best rifle.look up "remington lee 1880s they were made for the navy in 45/70.it will cost you for custom rifle but GIBBS may do it less expensive because they have done it before

My big issue with the MN is the safety.  It's the most awkward thing I've ever encountered on a military bolt gun.  If not for that, I think your idea has a lot of merit.  You'd think - with the boatloads of these being sold - that somebody would come up with an after-market, sliding safety, Timney-style, trigger replacement.  Then you could buy the full-lenght version, at like $69, and go to town!
