Ordered new Marlin 35
« on: February 25, 2007, 03:00:37 PM »
I bought a new 35 in 1970 and traded it off around 1980.  Regretted it ever since and ordered a new one last Tuesday.  New one should arrive by this coming Tuesday the 27th.  Very excited about this as I have over the last couple of years started hunting with a Marlin 30-30.  Actually have two Marlin 30-30's.  These are going to my grand son's as soon as the 35 comes in.

The 30-30 has turned out to be an excellent deer gun for me, especially with the new Hornady ammo.

Going out tomorrow and get the bases and rings.  I have a new Bushnell Trophy to install on it.

Is it one of the new models designed for the Hornady ammo?  Did you get it in stainless?  If I didn't already have an older model in 35 Rem, I would either order a new one or maybe wait for the new model in .308.

It is not stainless.  How can I tell if its designed for the new ammo?

The new Marlin arrived today and anxious to check the manual in regards to being compatible to the new Hornady round I did find a statement that the rifle will accept the new Hornady Ammo.

Rifle looks good but seems lighter than the older 30-30's I have. That is a good thing. Fit and finish is good but not excellent. There was a scratch in the metal on the left side of the receiver about an inch long.  Don't know how that got there.  Also was very hard to operate the lever.  I cleaned it and must say that for a new Rifle of substantial expense it was as nasty as any Handy Rifle I ever bought new.  I did at one time have several  Handy rifles but one by one got rid of them.  I was hoping that Marlin QA had took care of things I experienced with the H and R's.  But I am apparently wrong.  Did anyone else experience anything like I have described? Did I expect to much?

Most of the new guns I buy are very dirty.  I'm kinda glad, it means they are shooting them prior to shippment.  If the quality of new Marlins is as good as the newer NEF products they should be excellent.

Tacomaj, the only differnence between the new leverloution ammo and any other 35 rem round is the bullet, the pressures and such are the same.  It is perfectly safe to shoot them out of your rifle.  The only issue that I have heard is that some rifles don't like to feed the last round in the tube properly, but if that is an issue with your rifle a replacement follower is available from Marlin to fix that problem.  The XLRs are just a different model of your rifle but the rate of twist and chamber dimensions are the same.  I haven't tried any of the leverloution ammunition yet and probably won't as for where I hunt I see no advantage to it.  It will do nothing at 75 yards that the 200 grain core lokt I am currently shoot won't do.  Now in some areas the added range might be a benefit but it still is not going to turn the 35 into a long range rifle.  When I am hunting an area where longer shots are a possiblilty I just hunt with a different rifle but for close work the 35 is an incredible cartridge that should be far more popular than what it is, it is plenty accurate for the range it is usable at, it doesn't kick you out from under your hat or deafen you with a single shot and it kills game with boring effectiveness with very minimal meat

Yep, the follower is different.  Follower is a fancy name for little piece of plastic like a cup that fits in the magazine tube.  The new follower  looks like the old one until you look inside it.  Inside the new follower there is an insert with a tiny little hole in the center.  That little hole is where the pointed tip of the new Hornady ammo goes to keep the rounds in the magazine in line for proper feeding.  I just put the new follower in my 336 CS 35 Rem and it cycles fine.  Hopefully I will get to the range tomorrow to put rounds through it.  I had it sighted in before it began the occassional jam that sent it to the gun smith 2 times.   Funny neither smiths knew about any of this...

In my 30-30's I put a regular 170 gr. Winchester round in first then finish with the Hornady loads. I never have to get past the first or second shot anyway.

Based on the tip above I just checked my follower and it is Red with the center indented about 1/8 inch.  I am set up from the factory!  thanks for the tip.

Tomorrow I will install my scope and sight in at 25 yards then off to the range this week end for 100 yards. Must get some 200 gr corlokts also.  I believe this little rifle will be great for woods hunting. I know the 30-30 is.

My 35 Rem has become my favorite rifle.  Mine is a rather short version, but thats the way I like it for hunting in the woods.   Good luck with your new 35.
