BB airgun hunting
« on: June 02, 2009, 10:25:45 AM »
i used my 1200 daisy handgun to kill some rats. There were about 10 that i had been watching and i set out some meat fat and got them to come to it. I got all 10 with gamo steel BBs. the gamo steel bbs give Maximum penetration, pellet gun accacry, and hit harder then other bbs. they are 10.0 grain so they heavyer then a lot of .177 pellets.

I don't know that I'd try to take anything much bigger than a rat with BBs.  At least not with my Daisy 840.  I've shot grackles with it, and they just squawk, flap their wings, and give me a dirty look.  With pellets out of the same gun (it will do both), they squawk, flap their wings, and fly to a different branch, then give me a dirty look.  :P

well the gun shoots bbs at 420fps, the gamo bbs are 10.0 grains, the GAMO .177 Hunter pellets are only 8.3grs. In fact the only pellets that are that heavy are JSB .177 DIABOLO EXACT HEAVY(10.2 gr) and the rest are 12-16gr. Now these bbs are the same size of a pellet but most bbs are only  5.1 gr which is also how much GAMO .177 Raptor. PBA. are(5.0gr). there lack of weight  gives they a lack of power so if you have bbs that are 7.1or more grains you would have the same kind of power as a pellet gun.

if you think i am wrong go to gamo.com and look for yourself.

here are there test with the steel bbs

I am not doubting you, calling you wrong, or questioning your intellect.  What I'm saying is that I would not shoot anything bigger than a rat with BBs (which is what you say you shot, so we're not even arguing about this).

From my personal experience with BBs and pellets out of one particular gun, BBs just don't have the authority to give me faith in their terminal ballistics.  With this same particular gun, I don't have any faith in the terminal ballistics of pellets, either, though they do hit ever so slightly harder.

I congratulate you on your successful hunt (which I forgot to do in my previous post, so I apologize for that), and encourage you to continue to control the rat population in any way you find effective.

I have had lead BB's that were great.  the steel BB's are light.
I have a BB machine gun, that uses CO2 and has either a 1, 3 or 6 rounds per trigger pull and there are three cyclic rates.  300 RPM, 450 RPM, and 600RPM.
the steel BB's will go through a live soda can.
The lead BB's will go through 3 live soda cans.  When shooting at a cheap 6 pack.
I wanted to use it to shoot mice/ rats in the garage.  the steel BB's eneded up bouncing all over the place on the cement floor.  I did get to tommy gun a couple of rats that were out by the dog food trash can one evening.  Three with three bursts of 3 rounds at 600 RPM.
Have used the 6 round burst at 450 to shoot crows out of the sky flying just over the house.

There are a few full auto BB videos on Youtube, looks like a whole lot of fun.  I enjoyed shooting full auto guns in the USAF, thanks to friends in the weapons' training area,  If I was off duty when some new weapons came into the base, and they had to be test fired, I'd get a call to get on some fatigues(predecessor to the BDU) and meet at the range.  My son; a USAF Medic, got to do the same thing in Iraq; his weapons card expired so they sent him to the range(run by the Army) to get recertified.  He spent 5 afternoons there and was certified in everything they had.

All depends on the velocity they are driven at...
1 bb sized shot in a 12 ga. will bring down a Goose or Turkey.
Seen it with Ducks too. I took a Whitetail with one pellet
from a load of #3 buck from a 20 ga. I think #3s are .25 caliber.
Pretty small sphere to be killing a deer.
