After doing some wheel'n and deal'n (Thanks Josh

)I finally ended up getting a 22 Hornet barrel and mounted it up to the receiver I had plans on and some still in the making. Anyway I got some time on my hands now, due to a broke hammer....I know weird huh?....here's a pic

As you can see, the little lip broke off, but I am going to order a couple extra hammers tomorrow.

But back on topic.
I haven't seen much practicality for the little Hornet -for me- as I use my 223's, with either reduced loads or full power ones, for all my varmint needs. So I mainly got it for fun

I want it to be lightweight and easy to pack along with me in my backpack.
I don't want to slap a U'ber heavy high power scope on it, just something modest and light
So I am considering a Weaver K-4 or K-6.

Maybe a Nikon Prostaff 4x or a 2-7x32 but the parralax is set a 75 yards $:-\$ Not sure it would be the best choice

I am open to suggestions on this one.....

I am also curious about Open Sights for this barrel. I usually never use them unless for handguns, and I know it's been talked about a ton here, but what extra sights -non peep- can I get that will mount up? I hear a lot about Williams and that ordering them straight from NEF/H&R is the cheaper way to go. I am more or less just curious in this dept.

As far as handloading, I am going to order a Lee Collet die and I need a shellholder. I have everything else I need so far, crimp die, FL die, seater etc...
I keep hearing that LiL'Gun is THE powder for the Hornet so that is definitely on the list, as well as trying out some BlueDot loads -(Thanks Paul

Now I open the floor up. Any suggestions I can get, and I mean ANY will be appreciated as always.
Bullets, Optics, Open Sights, Dies, Brass, Primers, Factory Ammo, Loads and loading methods anything.
I have been reading full throttle up on it in manuels so I have got a good start

Aaron, I don't really know what ranges you are wanting to cover...Have you considered Red Dot sights/open Red Dot sights/Shotgun scopes.

Here's another scope to add to your possibilities, great little scope, made by the same Philippine optics shop that made the WTC, WTE and ATV, it's very clear, just like the them, weighs 12oz, 12" long.

Yeap thats how it happened. Thing was I didn't think I pressed that hard on the hammer $:-\$ Oh well, no problem, I have really got the nack for taking these apart and putting them back togather now

And thanks for the link, I haven't seen those around in a while. It might just be the ticket.

CK - I thought about that, and to tell ya the truth, I would love to have a RedDot on it. But the area they cover is a bit much. That is unless I got one with the multi-reticle with the illuminated crosshairs. That might work too..

Give H&R a call and order a hammer, they're less than $10 on the parts list. You might pick up one on Ebay, but you'll probably have to buy the entire guts of a frame to get it, SB1 and SB2 internals are the same.

Red dots on centerfire rifles really are a poor choice in my opiniion, the smallest dot is I've seen is 1 moa, that means it covers 1" at 100yds. For short range shooting, 50-60yds, it might work fine, but that's certainly well short of the Hornet's accuracy potential. How can you shoot a ½" group when the reticle covers twice that? Maybe a 6 O'clock hold would work, dunno, just didn't like the one I tried at all. Great on a shotgun or maybe a pistol, tho!!

I had plans on ordering a couple hammers, in case this ever happens again. And will call tomorrow.
I love the lightness and shortness of the RedDots, but thats what I have a problem with. It covering too much of the target. I don't plan on using it for target work too much. But enough of course to see what it likes and doesn't.
On a Shotgun and Handgun I love a RedDot, and have my own plans there as me an CK have talked about extensively as of late

Mt30-30, I was leaning that way. Just enough for a decent close up, yet clear enough for a longer shot if needed.
I have other rifles, be it Handis or others that are my target rifles.
Like I said this is something to have fun with.

For load data use 13 grains of hogdon lilgun under a bullet from 35 to 45 grains. The 35 grain Vmaxes really work good on ditch cougars.

I've never shot any factory ommo out of my hornet so can't help ya there. I will tell you my superlight hornet has givin me .502 inch groups At 100 yards out of a gun vice. That was with 13 grains of lilgun and a 35 grain Vmax.

The Winchester supremes in the black box shot the best of the factory stuff I tried--tales about 5-10 rounds for the moly to set into the barrel. Too spendy for me though so I shoot a max charge of Lil'gun and the 35gn vmax.

I actually went back and looked at almost all the past 22 Hornet topics here in the NEF/H&R forum. There's some good info to be found....and thats a LOT of searching!!!
Seems different barrels likes are a toss up. Some seem to like the Remington and some like the Winchesters.
Seems like the Hornadys are about the hottest and produce about the best velocities...not suprising

I also see that Remington Brass holds just a hair more powder than the Winchester brass...what about the Hornady brass

Aaron,

The Hornet will let you shoot those reduced .22 Mag type loads cheaper than the .223 and probably cheaper than .22 Mags. That means it really does have a purpose!

I suppose I should tell you that I have my Hornet barrel in a frame, but I don't have the .223 in a frame. That should tell you where I place the greatest importance.

The Hornet or .243 will do everything the .223 will do, so for me, the .223 is what is redundant.

Instead of a red dot, you might consider a holograph with different reticules. It should be smaller and lighter than a red dot and still give you more options.

I have a 4-12X 40mm store brand Bushnell Banner on mine with AO. I crank it down to 4X to locate tree rats and then increase the power if needed.

I can't really add anything of importance that hasn't been said but I will try

Factory ammo - The Winchester 46 gr hp is a safe bet. The Hornady 35 gr vmax would be a good choice but the factory stuff is so hot, an honest 3100fps, that I think if it was a whisker slower like with the common hand loads it may be a bit more accurate.

Reloads- I just researched that and it seems 13 gr. of lil'gun and any bullet is the standard. I would likely try a 40 gr first.

What are these loaded with? Combined Technology 50gr Ballistic SilverTips?

ironduke - I do like those Black/Yellow lams, though they are getting harder to find. I am happy with the camo straight grips. They feel and look good. Especially with open sights.

Paul - Thats interesting reasoning, I never thought of it that way

I am seeing more and more usefulness of a Hornet the more I read about it and see how everyone here loves theirs so much.
A holograph would be ok I think, but many are out of my price range. And I am curious as to how thivk the crosshairs are on them? Good suggestion though.
Perhaps I am wanting my cake and eating it too?

Seems like 13gr is about the magic number from many reports I read too. I believe I will start out with some 40gr V-Maxs and see how it goes from there.

Anything other than heavier bullets your Hornets dislike? Softpoints, Hollow points, ?
Looks like Sierra has some good choices for the Hornet too.

It's a way of lighting the trigger without taking the receiver apart. I have done a good trigger job on it already, but wanted to take out a little creep and it broke the little lip off. I never had that happen before.
Anyway, you basiclly cock the hammer, press forward on it with your thumb, and pull the trigger. Of course I catch the trigger before it dry fires to avoid any damage to the transfer bar. Strange it actually broke off the incredibly small lip there, as I wasn't pressing very hard. No problem though, I have learned a lot about taking them apart now because of practicing on another shotgun receiver. So I can put it together in a min or 2.
