30 Cal Carbine Handi
« on: March 03, 2007, 07:30:10 PM »
I've been around for a while and these rifles have sort to a love hate kind of attraction for me I am sorry to say.  I have some basic metal working tools and skills so I think I will make up a Handi in 30 cal carbine.  Probably would make a very nice ultra low recoil youth deer rifle, or one for a woman.  Bought a new 26 inch 700 remington take off barrel origionally in 300 Win Mag for 43.00 shipped and a Handi shotgun for $59.00 at the local pawn shop, have a 30 carbine reamer, so I think I will stub off the shotgun, cut down the 30 cal barrel and put together a 30 carbine Handi.  Anyone seen one of these?  I could even thread the barrel for a muzzel break, you could end up with a rifle with a negative recoil?  Just fooling, but really low like a .22?  The barrels for the 300 win mags are a dime a dozen, and the Handi shotguns cost less whole than a new barrel costs, anyone see any problem shooting a 30 carbine on a SB1 frame?  Larry

SAAMI MAP is 40kpsi, case head .356", both about the same as the 22 Rem jet which was chambered in the old H&R cast frames, the only thing I'd be concerned about is the larger firing pin hole of the SB1 shotgun frame which has caused problems with some rifle cartridges.

Heck of a good idea. Buy a SB2  firing pin and make a press in bushing for the firing pin. Would be nice if the barrel had a 1-15" twist for the lighter bullets.

You wont have to worry about underlug set back.

I shoot a 30BR with a 1-15 twist and 125gr bullets. Thes little cartridges are the cats meow.

I have had that idea myself in about every low pressure cartridge.  I am currently accumulating barrels and donors for stubs...30 carbine, 45 acp, 9mm, etc...

Good idea. I built a .32-20 stub rifle about 10 years ago and it's a real fun gun; no recoil and it shoots great.

Ah man! You have no idea how much I would love to have a 32-20 in a handi, I have it in two pistols and one rifle right now, but want more of them, I love the cartridge.

My .45 ACP stub project is still cooking along and the idea of a .30 cal carbine chambered Handi is great. I do have a shoebox full of .30 cal carbine ammo I was going to trade to Kittery Trading Post for whatever I could get but having a gun to shoot it out of would be much better. As much as I would like one though I may just trade the .30 cal ammo for some more .45 ACP loading supplies for that special day in the future when my .45 ACP Handi barrel is completed....<><.... ;D

 ;D

Hmm... but then it would be a 30-20, I had one of those belive it or not when I was shooting silhouette, it just isn't the same. Mater of fact I think I still have a set of reading 30-20 dies somewhere.....

Yep, mine has a .308 bore; bullet availability is much better. Some dies used to come with a .308 expander......I just replaced the larger one and it works fine.

I have a 7.62X39 handi I use for the same thing.I have a bunch of the remington 100grain/.310 bullets that work fine with light 30 Herret reloads . Some of the Speer plinkers and Hdy SJ's I have measure .310 most measure .309 . More work to do with it but 8-9Unique with one of the plinkers should make a dandy small game round. I also have a bunch of 32 mag bullets jacketed and cast .312 that should work well. And yes when you reload them with normal primers the misfire problem goes away.

I mostly shoot cast in my 32-20s, I have two 6 hole molds and a couple of old lyman 2 holers. But it is a thought.

Sorry for the hijack, we now take you back to your regular .30 carbine talk already in progress.

I also have a 30 Carbine in a TC barrel and you are correct that it is a nice and accurate little round. Keep us posted on your project. Should be a fun plinker and small game gun. Also heavy enought to soak up that brutal recoil .:->

I like the idea of a 30 Carbine Handi. I have a couple M1s and a Old Model Ruger in that caliber and a Handi with a good trigger and target scope would tickle me. The M1 Carbines don't do justice to the caliber's potential. My uncle and I converted two carbines to straight pull bolt actions and they grouped much better then original.
I also agree with wanting the 32 cal barrel on my 32-20. I shoot an Colt Army Special in 32-20. Tried a Ruger Blackhawk and T/C, both of which had the .308 bore. Wasn't the same.

So I take it that a 22 Hornet could be done this way too, right?
