What is a good youngsters bow????
« on: November 02, 2005, 05:11:35 PM »
I have a boy turning 6 this month and would like to find a good used bow for him.  I know his dl is 18-19" but unsure what he can pull.  I am guessing in the 15-20 lb range.  He has to have surgery for a hernia 9 days before his b-day so he won't get to pull it for a while but this is what he wants.  It is time to put down the plastic recurve I guess and get him a real one like dads.  I would appreciate all the advice I can get here as my knowledge of these little bows is limited.  Thanks

The Mathews Genisis bow may be worth a look at. Never seen these but it is extremely customizable with adjustments to fit a young shooter as they grow.

The genesis is fairly popular but i would like something with a let off.  It is my understanding that thes do not have a let off.  I have been looking at the hoyt banshee.  anybody have experience with one of these???

I have been very pleased with my son's Browning Micro Midas. It is 20-40 # and the draw length is adjustable from 19"-29". And at the shorter draw length you can probably get it below 20#s to start with. This is a bow that he could easily shoot for 5 or 6 years. They sell for around $225 with a quiver, arrows and sight.

Good Luck!

I bought a Parker Buckshot for my daughter and love it.  The thing that is great with the Buckshot is that Parker has a program so you can change the limbs and string to increase the poundage and draw length.  I am not sure if it will be small enough for a six year old but it is a great bow.

My daughter is 15 and has been using a PSE Spyder for five years now. My wife uses the Browning Micro Midas.

I don't think you can do much better than the micro midas but it might be more than he needs right now. You might think about buying him a cheap little starter bow for now, I think bear makes one in the 20 lb. range.

There are also plenty of recurves available for children. The hardest part is not the bow, but finding good arrows that are properly spined. You wouldn't be happy with fishtailing and inaccurate arrows - neither will your kids.

Just bought the Hoyt Banshee for my 10 year old.  He is on the small side.  It has some of the greatest adjustablility in draw lenght and pull.  It is a quality made bow.  No plastic pieces, etc.  He should be able to hunt with it for several years following.
