Scope question
« on: March 21, 2007, 10:17:18 AM »
I mounted a Bushnell Red dot scope on my shotgun for fox hunting at night.  I was having a terible time seeing the front bead even after painting it white.

Even on the lowest brightness setting and smallest dot the red dot is too bright at night.  You can see the eyes of the animal but when looking through the optics you can't see them.

I am now thinking about a low powered scope with illuminated cross hairs.  Will this cause the same problem as the red dot with too much light?  Anybody use an illuminated sight at night for predators (either shotgun or rifle)?

Midway sells a Barska brand scope for around $65.  It is a 42 mm and the only comment is "great for coyote hunting at night".

Any comments would be appreciated.

If your useing a shotgun I think you`ll have more problems with a scope. I would recomand that you try one of the lite drawing front sights. I would think that they would catch enough lite from your lite to be visible.

This is the problem with the red dot or any lighted reticle at night. It will blind you, even on a low setting. I use a post or heavy duplex for hunting in low light condition . This works for me.

For a shot gun try taping a small glow stick "the kind for a fishing rod" right before the bead. works great.
