Rem SP-10 vs Browning Stalker 10
« on: April 12, 2007, 02:37:38 AM »
I also put this post on the waterfowl section, so you don't have to answer it both place's. Starting in the mid '70's thru the early '90's, I use to do alot of Can.goose hunting here off Lake Erie. Used an Ithaca Mag-10, and had it modified by Stan Baker(barrel shortened to 28''-screw in chokes-forcing cone lengthened)But it was stolen in '91, and I got married. So my goose hunting has been on hold for quite a few years. But I'm hoping to get some time to get out this coming fall, and am thinking of getting another 10ga.I still have my Mec 600 jr, plus lots of reloading supplies. (Ballistic Products wads, cushions, and mostly Federal hulls, which will bring up another question) So I'm going to stick with a 10ga.I've seen used Rem Sp-10's for about the same price as a new Browning. But was hoping to get some feed back from some of you as to personal experiences. Since the Rem is pretty much a copy of the Mag-10, I'm about 99% sure it's a quality firearm, although things do change. And I've always been happy with anything Browning I've had,(although never a shotgun) Anybody have any positive/negative comments on either one? Just thought of a question while typing this. Even though the hulls have always been kept dry, would anybody know if there would be a problem with the fiber bases in the bottom? Most of my hulls are Federal, marked steel shot, but I do have a few Winchester hulls. Any comments, good or bad are appreciated!! We keep trying peace, it usually doesn't work!!Remember (12/7/41)(9/11/01) gypsyman

I was going to post a similar question and your question has answered some of mine.

The four 10ga repeaters that I am aware of are the Ithaca Mag-10 (discontinued), the Remington SP-10, the Browning Gold, and the BPS.

I've been thinking of getting into the 10ga, main reasons being that it handles heavy payload better than the 12ga 3.5", both in patterning, uniformity of loads, and recoil management.

My first thought was the 10ga BPS.  First reason being better reliability due to being pump action (I'm generally not fond of tube fed semi-autos.  I like tube fed pumps and box mag semi-autos.)  Essentially a lower maintenance shotgun.  Another being price.  Not that 10ga shells are cheap, but something as rugged and reliable as anything and lower in price is a good thing to me, and all that it costs me is the effort to work the pump action, which I don't mind at all and actually happen to like.

But I'm not ruling out the autos, and have been taking a hard look at them.  My main questions were how the SP-10, Browning Gold, and Ithaca Mag-10 compare, and reading that the SP-10 is pretty much the same as the mag-10 answers part of that.

The BPS 10 is a great gun.  There is no better mass production shotgun made today than the BPS if you're a serious hunter in real conditions. Any guage, for any purpose.
