I am in the market for a new inline, but I need one that will meet the new Idaho regualtions (please don't turn this thread into another discussion about the changes in Idaho). While rummaging around the internet I stumbled accross a design I had not see before.  It is basically an inline with a external pivoting hammer that uses #11 caps. I know T/C once had a design like this (The Scout) and from what I have been able to learn there were some accuracy issues with its 1 to 20 twist. I have found two other builders who use this same hammer design but use a 1:26 twist, which should be good for conicals: Markesbery and Kahnke. I have done a pretty thurough internet seach and have found very little about them. Does anyone have any personal experience with either brand that they would care to share? Does anyone know of anyone else building a inline external pivoting hammer muzzleloader that used #11 caps?

Thanks for the help!!!!

Here is a copy of an answer.... from "Fairchase"

huntersmurf,
I would strongly consider waiting for Idaho to print its new regulations before buying.
The exact words of their new rules may make you reconsider buying a brand of this design for use in Idaho’s traditional seasons.

As far as the two rifle makers are concerned.
Russ Markesbery is a crook who will not warrantee his rifles, no matter what he says. If you ever have a problem with his products, he will simply stop answering his phone. I have had two of his rifles and both arrived with broken stocks. He replaced one after months of begging. He has completely ignored me on the other. It has never been fixed or replaced...My $600.00 loss. Call Sportsman's Warehouse in Boise and if you like and ask them. Markesbery stopped answering the phone for them too...Needless to say, his rifles have since been dropped from Sportsman's inventory.

On the other hand, Gordon Kahnke seems to be a businessman who will do what he claims as far as trying to make things right if there is a problem with one of his rifle, including giving you a full refund. The issues here were, when his rifle arrived and I started to clean it, there were many, major problems. In fact it appeared the rifle was made in a garage with hand tools and a vice. The rifle he sent me was a K2000 and it had both sights drilled off center and shimmed with playing card pieces, mistake holes were drilled in the barrel and when he realized his error, he simply rotated the barrel 180 degrees and hid them under the stock. Also his barrels’ locking lug was not brazed on, it was bolted on and the screws were completely stripped. He was relying on locktite to make sure it stayed in place. The hammer face had been cut with a torch or welder and was nearly missing the nipple it was so misaligned. I could go on but, I think you get the idea it was a mess, and what blew my mind he knew about these mistakes when he shipped the rifle to me, Because when I called him he said "you don't miss much do you"
However, in his defense, he said he was very sorry, he claimed he was still making his assembly tools and jigs in his shop and he would make me an entirely new rifle or refund my entire purchase. Needless to say, I received a full refund within one week. I am sorry I don’t have better info to pass along about these companies and I don’t enjoy giving bad reports, but in this case I feel these reports are 100% justified. Good luck.

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Sabotloader,

Thanks for the info on Markesbury and Kahnke, that is all I need to know not to go down that road.

I agree that waiting is the best course of action. I don't plan on buying anything in less than a year, it will take that long for all the dust to settle. But I do like window shopping so why wait!

Speaking of window shopping, from one of your other posts I rememer you shoot at Green Mountain Barrel, do you know if those ever been available in stainless? To the best of my knowledge they are only currently offered in blued, but I wonder if that has always been the case.

Just went the GM sight and saw this posted...

HALF-PRICE BARREL CLOSEOUT SALE

Limited quantities, no minimums, first come/first served. These barrels will not last long at these prices so act fast. To order go to INTERNET SPECIALS or call (603) 447-1095.

Note: The prices of the Internet Specials have already been cut in half. So the price you see is the price you are paying.

Green Mountain Rifle Barrels provide the world's best competitive shooters and hunters with accuracy and dependability they can count on. This uncompromising quality is achieved by crafting barrels using a hands-on approach in production. Individual attention is dedicated to ensure that each barrel is of the safest, most accurate and dependable quality.

Mine is a stainless barrel and I really do like it....  Here is the web site for the barrel....

This up coming meeting in Boise 3/6-7-8 should tell the final story for this year, but I fully expect a change next year.  IF&G are taking a lot of flack about the whole thing now... It is just a matter of can we organize enough to overcome the organized traditionalists & that is not all traditionalists...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

Recently made a purchase of a Markesbery Grizzly 50 cal. The barrel is marked Markesbery but the action says Kankhe-Markesbery. The gun looks just fine to me. My inquiries to Markesbery have not been answered but the guy at Kankhe was more than willing to talk to me. Both guns are of the same design. I have not fired the gun yet, I got it used on the internet and when it arrived I found some kind of hard deposits in the bore that I am still trying to get out before I shoot it. The trigger is good and I like the posative cross bolt safety that completly blocks the hammer from falling on the nipple.

Go look at Pedersoli's website, the Modern Gun 2 section.  The Brutus guns are exactly the same thing as the Kahnke/Markesberry, but with Pedersoli making/marketing them, I'm sure that they are much better guns with much better factory service.

I'm sure that Pedersoli saw something that the other "big" makers didn't in the design of the rifles.  The Markesbery Guns office was actually based about 15 miles away from where I live, and I know that there were a lot of legal issues between the gun designer and the stock designer.....all of which is heresay among the local gun shops of course.   :D  I would wager that Kahnke was the gun designer and Markesbery bought rights to distribute the design with their own name.  When the legal issues arose, Pedersoli probably bought the rights from Markesbery, and so on.  I know that the other gun on the site,  the Denali, was an independent maker when it first came out, then Pedersoli picked it up.  A lot of times, these little makers get in over their heads with everything involved with running a big gun-type business, and then a big company buys the rights to bail them out.  That's what happened with Mossberg and the ATR--formerly the Charter Arms Field King, formerly the Raptor bolt action.  The small companies get a good design, but can't develop it the way that they want, so they sell the rights to get out the red.
