Oregon Trails "Silver" bullets?
« on: March 10, 2007, 01:10:55 PM »

Oregon Trails says that their laser cast bullets will not lead the barrel even when driven at jacketed velocities.
Now I'm now wondering how the expansion would be with one of them? Has anyone used them on deer or hogs and done a recovery?

The alloy is also very brittle, if your talking rifle velocities, thigs can get messy.

In my .45 Colt revolvers, the 300 grainers are ok, but I have not found their 255 SWC to be accurate enough for my tastes.

Thanks Guys

Well, I was thinking of trying them in a 30-30. And I didn't think there'd be much in the way of expansion, but you know that hope springs eternal.
I'm surprised they leaded however. But they are supposed to be guaranteed, so I guess if they do that in my rifle I call them on it.

While I probably wouldn't hunt with them in 30 cal. I shoot them slow in my 1894 for accuracy and shoot them at Marlin speed in my 45/70 and they are accurate.  Neither gun shows any leading.  If you are shooting either of these guns they do not have to expand, as they are probably already larger than an expanded bullet of a smaller caliber.  No I haven’t shot a deer with one yet but hope to remedy that next year.

I,ve got a bunch of the 405 grn  all loaded for my 45-70 .According to the load data  they should be traveling about 1750 fps at the muzzle.I'll let you know how they shoot if the snow ever melts enough for me to get to the range. I also have some Cast Performance W L N G C that are loaded to approxmately the same velocity to try. The next on my list will be the Jae- Bok Youngs Crater Lite 2 . They are made for short throated guns like the Handys. I've got a whole lot of shooting to do once the range opens.
