Changing barrels on Savage 110 E

Have any of you done this ,if so about what is the cost and would it have to be done by a Gunsmith ?

Have not done it yet cause the barrel seems to be lost in the mail.

I have a model 11, that I am converting from 223 to 243.  In order to change from say a 25-06 to 30-06 all you need to change is the barrel.

You will need, a barrel nut wrench, most likely an action wrench, and go no-go guages for the new caliber.  More info to be had at www.savageshooters.net  You must join to read their forums, but it's free and TONS of info there.  look at the FAQ's on barrel changing.

Yes I've had a .35 Whelen put on a Savage 114.  I didn't do it myself only because a gunsmith was willing to do it for $30, which is less than the wrench and gauges would have cost.  He also mounted a front sight ramp for me - for an additional fee.

I'm not really sure whether I did the wise thing.  So far I haven't wanted to put the .30-06 barrel back on so maybe I did.

Savage rifles have got to be the easiest rifles to work with for the DIY shade tree gun hack. Did my first one a few years back....takes about five minutes to change the barrel and set the headspace. PM me if you want tons of info. and where to get what you need.

What if you've got a front sight mount on the barrel?  Can you trust that it would come back to the top if you swapped barrels then put that one back on?

I've got that '06, but I'm afraid that if I take the Whelen barrel off, the next time I put it back on the front sight ramp would be 1/8 turn away from plumb.  At least that would seem to be about my luck.

Or is this best done once and leave the barrel in place?

Still haven't seen any reason why I should use the '06 bbl.  Although some folks are getting some zippy velocities with 220 grain bullet in an '06.

Because of the way the 'jam nut' works on a Savage rifle you can......and should index exactly the same no matter how many timesyou remove the barrel. That is why they are so easy to work with......
You would need a simple witness mark and a fired round from the gun previous to removing the barrel.

My Savage 110G model witch is a 300 Mag. I have had the barrel changed twice by a gunsmith. Everything has to be just right thats why I didn't do it myself. I don't have the equipment to do it.

The cost is about 300.00 dollars= new barrel and the labor.

Unless you got a custom barrel you got took.  I paid $65 for a Savage take off barrel, plus I bought the tools too.  The action wrench, $60, headspace guages (2) $30 each and a set of punches from Sears $10, Wheeler barrel nut wrench $30, plus I had to buy bolt head since I was changing case head sizes (223 to 243) $20.  Lets see that's $245 and it took me about an hour cause it was a first time and I had some learning to do.  Next time will be way quicker.  If you join www.savageshooters.net (free like graybeards), there are TONS of barrels (new and used) available for very reasonable prices.  About $75 to $100 is the norm on std barrels.

A gunsmith is not necessary to swap out barrels on a Savage.  Once you understand how to headspace the rest is easy.

The barrel was brand new and it had to be blued. I don't like to use  used stuff.
I still don't have the spacers that are needed.

My barrels come from Brownells and are Shilen barrels as far as I'm concerned they are one of the best barrels made.

I didn't exactly change barrels, but removed mine to have it rebored. I made my own barrel wrench. I didn't buy a gauge, but checked the witness markes lined up, and closed the bolt on a whole box of fired cases. That was a bit more'n 15 years ago, and I've been happy ever since.

The Shilen barrel (medium contour 1.20" - .75") was $165 with shipping.
I rented the reamer and the go gauge for 28$ and 5$ (7.50 shipping - return shipping 5$)
I purchased the wrench (20$) and made a barrel wrench and action wrench(15-20$).
I also had to buy $(15) and open up a bolt head as the factory doesn't offer the size that I wanted.
I would say that, including labor at 75-100$ per hour, you got a fair deal.  I've not looked at Brownell's Savage barrels, but if they are not cut to the 1.055" and threaded, and your gunsmith has to do that... Well, you got a steal!!!

If you have a friend with a lathe and the know-how, you can make one of these in just about any caliber you want.  The learning and the doing was most of the fun for me.  This was my first bolt action rebarrel, and it won't be my last.

Does Shillen not fully chamber the Savage replacement barrels?  Many companies do and it's a lot easier.  Just use a go and no-go guage, tighten the nut and your set.

What spacers do you need??

I was  assuming you bought a new barrel, most of the ones I quoted in the price range are new.  The Shillens certainly do have a good reputation.  My barrel was used (about 200rds) and it took me a total of 10 rounds to sight it in with the scope set up for the previous 223 barrel.

Four shots to put it in the bull at 50yds, then 3 more at 100 to get it 1.5" above the bull.  The next three went into .9", at 1.5" high.

I got my moneys worth.

Ineed to know if it is at all possible to swap a .308 sporter barrel out of a stevens 200 short action with a heavy .300 wsm target barrel? Or do I need a different type of short acton reciever? Please help I have a pile of parts but no gun to shoot.
