So far, AA 1680 has done well for me.

I'm itching to try some others...As soon as my powder is gone.

I have tried Lil Gun and H110.  So far H110 has worked best for every bullet I have tried except the 40 grain Remington HP.

Seeing that I prefer to use heavier 45 & 50 gr. bullets I get my best results using H4227.  Lawdog

I'm a big fan of the .22Hornet from the day when they were imported by Brno, the forerunner of CZ.  In fact, Brno made their reputation in N. America with that little Hornet.  My only problem was in not knowing how finicky they could be to reload.  It took some time for me to learn.  From then on it was a real sweetheart.  Best wishes.

When I was shooting the 22 Hornet I was using WW296 and had very good accuracy.  :D

I like heavier bullets too.  What is your reason for liking them?

I've switched from my original H4227 equivalent to Lil'Gun, and happy with the results.

I originally shot the 35gr V-Max, (Get 'em out quick !),
but found that the Nosler 40gr Ballistic Tips were more consistent.

I've just tried some Hornady 50gr PSP's and they went good as well.

I think a longer heavier bullet would;
1. have better BC, for flatter shooting out at distance,
and,
2. allow a deeper seat for more consistency in the thin neck of the Hornet.

Should also buck the wind a bit better.

cheers,

I have been using 12.5 AA1680 for about 10 years with good results . I use a 40 Gr Nosler ballistic tip and Rem . Small pistol primer. Not real hot but very accurate in my Contender Carbine . I neck size only with a Lee Collet die and crimp with A Lee Factory Crimp die . You know Hornet's are a disease once you start messing with them . They are fickle to load but when you get a good one they are very rewarding. Another thing about hornets is they really cause you to refine your loading to get a good load. I am about to try some Lil-gun .

I shoot a CZ 527 and it loves the Hornaday V-Max in 35 grs.  I use a military surplus powder (WC820) that work just great.  I am getting sub 1/2" groups @ 100 yds.  See no reason to change with these results.     ;)
Just another voice in the crowd!!!

According to JBM calculations, that is so.  (But only just).  I ran a comparison between Speer 40, 45, 50 & 55 gr bullets of the same form and the 50gr comes out tops. It is flatter shooting and has a higher velocity beyond 150yds or so and seems to have a higher muzzle energy as well?  Have you chronographed your loads?  I would be interested to know how Lil'Gun compares with AR2205 (H4227) with the heavier bullets.  (I'm still using that powder).

Cheers

Sorry, haven't chronographed the 50gr load.
My Nosler 40gr and Hornady 35gr V-Max Lil'Gun 13.0gr loads were doing around 2,900fps.
I haven't used AR2205 in my Savage Model 40 yet, as I started on Lil'Gun, as soon as I got it.

I'll get around to it one day, maybe, but potentially, the pressures will be higher, using 2205.
I'd hesitate shooting a 50gr with a full load of 2205. Might do some damage !

I was using 11.3gr AR2205 (H4227equivalent) in my Brno Fox with the 35gr's, but as the barrel/chamber was stuffed, the results weren't spectacular.
The best I had was from factory Hornady V-Max.
They were doing around 3,000fps, as the box says.

The factory loads have a cannelure and crimp, which seems to bring a bit of consistency to the neck hold on the little projectile.
I've noticed that the same projectiles over the counter aren't cannelured for crimp.

cheers,

I have loaded up some rounds with 2205 and different heads and fired them into a firing tube to check for pressure signs.  I can shove 11.7 gr behind a 45 Speer and 10.8 gr behind a 55 gr BTHP.  My chamber is oversize and my barrel is stuffed so this might explain the lack of excess pressure!  I can only estimate muzzle velocity by using bullet drop at 100m and 200m and that way I get 2750 fps with the 45 grainers.  I am trying a technique in which I do not resize but seat the bullet using paper cups made from paper hand towel.  This seems to work but the only test group so far is with 46 gr Super-X 218 Bee bullets - two shots fired at 50m, bullet holes clipping.  Hardly definitive!

LIL GUN!

LIL GUN!
Billy,  have you tried Lil'Gun with heavier bullets?  If so do you have results?  I want to go as heavy as possible but need enough velocity to stabilize in the hornet.  I know Lil'Gun gives best velocity with lowest pressure up to 45 gr but it does seem unstable at the top end -  it being a progressive burn rate powder.

Cheers

No I've only used lightweight bullets with the LIL GUN. I use it for varmint control and like a nice terminal effect. If ya know what I meen! 35 grain Vmaxes are my current favorite, but when I gwet ahold of some 36 grain Barnes varmint grenades I'm gonna give them a try.
