So far so good with .38-55
« on: February 28, 2007, 03:39:59 AM »
I got my barrel back from Old Scout and loaded up some rounds and headed to the range.  The load was 23 grains of IMR4895, .375 brass, and a 245 gr. Magnus RNFP.  Only did short range to get started.  I usually do this to keep control of the situation and try to prevent any wild tangents.  At both 25 and 50 yards it shot an under 1 inch group.  The load was fairly mild on my soon to be replaced shoulder.  On to 100 yards next!

Shot it at 100 yards, Friday,  Wind was blowing like crazy, I forgot my rest bag so I had to jerry rig one.  Tried brass that was fire formed and some new brass.  The new brass pretty much patterned all over the 8" target.  The fire formed strung vertically for 8" with about 12 shots.  Windage was right on.  I used the same load as before.  Anyone have any clues to try for tightrningup thr group, otyher than pick a better day?  I am still using the buckhorn part of the Smith sight.

Vertical stringing can be and is usually caused by inconsistent latch engagement, make sure the latch and latch shelf are clean, dry and oil free. Read the FAQs and Help sticky info, it's all been said in there to help newbies. ;) Make sure a loaded round is flush with the face of the chamber, if it sticks out any creating negative headspace, the action won't close all the way which can also cause vertical stringing.

You might try 15.0 gr of 2400 with that bullet (no fillers).  It's shooting pretty good for me and it has very mild recoil.  I have a red dot on mine right now, but will probably put a scope on it for load developement.  That load will hit the target at 185 yards with about 12" of hold over.

Brought it back to the range.  Remembered my rest this time.  I increases my load to 24 grains of IMR4895 for some forgotten reason.  It duplicated it's one inch group at 50 yards.  It was shooting 12" high at 100 yards using the bottom position on the ladder.  Sooo I ordered a Williams front hooded sight with base.  It more than makes up the sighting error and should give me some adjustment around 100 yards, then it's on to 200 yards!!!  The vertical stringing was gone, I made sure to latch the action as consistant as possible.
