Crimp to nose question on bullet for FA 454...
« on: February 07, 2007, 04:49:42 PM »
I was looking at ordering some of the bullets cast from the RCBS 300 grain SWC mold for use in my 454.  What is the maximum crimp to nose length that I can have in the FA cylinder?  Also, what is the best diameter to order for this gun.  Most of the ones I've used in the past were .452 I think.  Thanks for any help on this one.  GS

I can't give you that measurement without going out to my loading room, but I can tell you that my handloads using the Lyman 452651 335 gr. cast bullet are 1.760" O.L., and they are about .050" short of the cylinder face on my FA 83. The RCBS bullet you refer to will fit fine.

My 83 is exactly .452" at the throats and so is the bore. Anything over that diameter will not chamber without force. You would have to slug your barrel and chambers to verify this, but with the quality of F.A. revolvers, I'll bet it is the same.

The longest nose length is 0.403.

FA cyl length is 1.786
454 case length 1.383

I'd would not go over 0.390 in case of nose jump...

Had some conversations with Dick Casull and Wayne Baker many years back, about this. Have to go dig my info on the exact measurement. But there is almost always some creep of bullet, and just a hair too much can mess you up, like what happened a while back up here in Alaska. A guy was hunting with his FA 454, and saw some cubs, and just when he thought, where is mom, she was on him. He got 3 shots off point blank, in the tumble, and the bullet jumped and tied up the 4th shot. Luckily, the bear turned and left. Nope, they didn't find the sow either. Ammo was his reloads, and after I spoke to him, he admitted it was his error with not enough crimp, and too hot a load. Did a lot of playing with this OAL, because most molds back then were for the 45 Colt longer cylinder, and the FA had a short cylinder. Only till later did these custom mold makers cut molds to your specs. As far as diameter, I've gone through 25 FA, one a 50AE, and the rest 454's. Diameter varied on the cylinder throats from as tight as .450", to some that would take a .454" bullet. Found that out back then too because only heavy bullets around were .458" bullets, and I had to size to .454" then 452" diameter, and sometimes .450" to work. Mike some bullets of different diameters if you can, and see what goes through snug.

Dennis,
Good to hear from you buddy!!How have things been up there?  I actually still have the massive flat point 454 bullets that you sent me loaded and waiting for pigs this spring hopefully.  I always seat and crimp the 454 in two steps and put a very strong crimp on the front that looks just like the FA factory ammo from years ago.  MS Hitman got me to doing this when I first started with the 454 and I have been happy ever since.  I got my bullets in that I was wanting to test yesterday and they look like they will work well for length.  I'm going to try and load a few in the next couple of days and see what happens in the group department.  Thanks for the info.  Take care.

Neck tension will hold a bullet much more reliably than crimp.  One can use a .44 Mag expander plug to bell the .454 case mouth without opening up the remainder of the case.  So far this has worked well for me.  Of course, not overloading the case helps tremendously as well.

Hitman, Yeah, I forgot to mention that you got me doing that also.  Overloading the case????  You know I don't do that..can't stand the loud noises.  GS

I use a Redding Sizer and a Redding expander.  For crimp I use a Lee Factory crimp.  That's all that is needed to keep 360gr bullets from jumping even at 1650fps.  I have experimented and carried over 1 round so that is went through 10 recoil cycles and it does move a bit, but it was less than 0.01".  So for 5 shots you will be fine with a 0.390 nose bullet...which BTW is what Cast Performance's nose length is for there 45cals
