45-70 BC Project Barrel Options
« on: May 17, 2007, 06:36:13 AM »
Hello all!

Well, recently I purchased a secon 45-70 BC barrel.  I already have one that I love and is a great shooter.  I purchased the barrel as a "project barrel" with the intent of making it something else, perhaps a 45-90/110/120.  Leaving practicality behind I thought a 45-120 with some 250 grain barnes TSX or even 300 grainers would be fun, maybe push the 458 mag velocities.  I realize that isn't the purpose of the 45-120 but remember practicality is being left behind and FUN is the intent.  Anybody have any ideas on just what to do with this barrel? And what "else" the 45-120 could do.

Shooting a H&R HandiRifle or Buffalo Classic with 300 grain bullets driven 2700+ fps is not my idea of "FUN", sorry.  40,000 CUP 45-70 loads are more than plenty from that platform.

IF you were going to use black powder in the longer round, I'd say do it, but I don't think you can gain much on the 45-70 with smokeless loads in the longer brass.  Now if you used BP and say, a 500-550gr lead bullet, well THAT would be impressive.
