Handi or Ultra-Varmit
« on: March 12, 2007, 04:42:19 PM »
I am considering getting a .223 bull barrel.  Does the 2 inches in barrel length on the Ultra offer any performance difference over the Handi?  Also, when one goes to  get new barrels on your rifle,  can you get Handi barrels on an Ultra?  I can order a bull barrel Handi from Walmart for a tad over 200 ( last time I looked and Sports South shows them in stock) and I saw an Ultra-Varmit at Gander Mountain for 259.  Decisions, Decisions!  The Ultra showed a serial number with a W,  made in 2006 I assume.  What rate of twist would it have?  I know there are a log of questions here but I am just trying to learn.

            Thanks

I think that the extra muzzel speed you get from the extra barrel is a plus. It would be a 1 in 9 twist. welcome to the site. ;D

Don't count on it being a 1:9" the last word was H&R switched back to 1:12", probably cuz the 1:9" doesn't shoot heavier bullets any better than the 1:12", maybe worse from most reports here.

Ultra and Handi frames are identical, the only difference is the stock and scope rail. You can have any centerfire barrel fitted to any SB2 frame made since 1999, be it a  Handi, Ultra or BC, that H&R makes cept the 10g and 12ga slug gun barrels.

I just bought a 223 ultra, but before I did I asked if standard contour barrels will fit in a forend cut for a bull barrel. Somebody on this site said yes.

This came off the hr website "All model SB2 Handi-Rifles™ can be fitted with the rifle barrels listed below..." My ultra box says it is an sb2-833 so I assume that all barrels will fit on an ultra.

As long as it is a Sb2 receiver I think it could be fitted for any barrel other than a rimfire.unless it was an older model receiver.

I have an Ultra the shoots very nicely.  With Black Hills 52gr Match JHP's it ranges from 3300 to 3330fps through the 24" barrel.  Groups as tight as sub 1/2" to 1".  ...of course with the occasional flyer.

The only thing the extra 2 inches could hurt is in the wallet for the premium Ultra version.   ...we're talk $20-$50 depending on your local market.

The laminated stocks are the biggest difference if you ask me.
The 22" is handy but the 24" has velosity to match most ballistic charts.
It would take a long scope to need that long scope rail wouldn't it.

No...not really...you have an additional slot for positioning your scopes if you use a smaller scope...It can be an advantage depending on how you need to set the scope up..For me...the saying "it's better to have it and not need it...than to not have it and need it" plays in there...

I like the longer barrels offered to...since it's a single shot...getting any extra velocity is a bonus..as well as the way they balance for me..for shooting off hand...

Given the price diffrence , go with the Ultra , if only for the stocks which are in most cases very nice also the bluing seems to be slightly better on those models . plus the extra 2" can't hurt either .

I happen to like the longer bases , as a mater of fact most of my H&Rs have Weaver 82s on them . I like to keep the rings as far apart as posable , the down side is i do loose the first 1" of rail at the hammer end , the up side is that i can cut slots were i need them and cut the rail to any liength that i need .

Thanks everyone for the info.  Think I will take another trip to Gander Mnt. this weekend and see if they still have the Ultra and if so,  well, I  will be a new Handi owner.

           Thanks Again

Well now I went and done it.  Bought the Ultra.  Already thinking about other barrels and I have not even shot this one yet.  That won't happen for a couple of weeks when I go back to my brothers in the  country (east texas).  I guess its time to clean her up and get her ready. Have a Simmons 44Mag scope laying around that I plan to put on her.

Thanks again for all the input from eveyone.
