Tactical and Packable.... pics inside..
« on: March 11, 2007, 05:58:30 AM »
I have been messing around for awhile now about making myself a short, lightweight packable Shotgun/Rifle combo. Something I can take apart, put in my backpack, or even throw over my shoulder and not feel it there. Ya know something real versatile with almost all ends covered.
I ended up with a Survivor stock set in trade and have been messing around with it.
What I like:
- easy to break down with not tools needed. I love the forearm screw.
- multiple sling adjustments
- lightweight
- sure grip

But it feels clubby and gauky.
So I got to messing around some more and seen some potiential in it for my project.
I went out and cut off about 5" off the forearm from the forward sling stud back to the middle support beam to the underlug.
Then took it to the grinder and slowly formed the forend back and them some detail work to make it look more square. After that I shortened the front sling swivel stud with the grinder to be able to use it without interfering with the forearm screw and drilled a hole centered and installed it.
Next I drilled another hole in the center to install yet another swivel stud, except this time it was for a Bi-Pod if needed. End result looks something like this 8)

I am still not done with this project and I still have a few things to work out. Looks like it will be a 3 barrel Handi.  I didn't plan on using a scoped rifle for this project, until I seen how handy it will be to take along hunting varmints and deer alike.
And I think it will work out great with an open sighted barrel like my Hornet, which I intend on shortening the barrel to about 17" to make it more packable.
Next to find a 22" Youth 12ga barrel and mount a RedDot for slugs and shotshell use.
I will report back on how she shoots like this soon, but I have good hopes as I believe there is even pressure and not much of it at that on the barrel.

Finally, a pic or 2 to see what's been keepin' you up at night. ;D  That looks real clean and I like that close-up on the forend screw...goot detail in all your pics.  I may order one of those screws for my Tamer and then do a little Dremel work so it sits kinda flush when its on there.  Come to think of it, that would work on any forend, even a wood one.  Tooless take down will be real nice out in the field.
Keep those pics com'n Aaron.

;D Yeap after many a talk with ya I finally came up with something to show. I just couldn't decide on what stock set to use for this project. And I never thought about modifying a Survivor set. But I think it will work out well.
I plan on ordering a few of the screws from Choate. They are nice to have around and make for a quick take down. I will check out the part number and price of them from Choate come Monday and post back with it. Hopefully that will help some.

Cool , can you make me one in BRIGHT BLUE    ;D  ;D  ;D  ;D  ;)

Man how things have a way of going around ;D Thanks, I look forward to trying it out. Hopefully today if I can get out.

Here's a couple more pics I snapped before my battery died:

Wearing my 22 Hornet. Makes a little 22" barrel look real long doesn't it?

And without my Bi-Pods wearing my 223 Standard contour

They aren't the best clear pics, but you get the picture. Still trying to workout the kinks with my camera

Well I went out today and took the little pack along with me. It shot very well with this setup and was comfortable off Bi-Pods and off hand as well.
Sadly I didn't get to group it, but I was firing at ranges of over 250 yards and hitting small rocks on the mountain side with my brother spotting me with a higher power scope than what I was using - 3-9x40 Mil-Dot. This setup is very easy to carry around and I was able to even fit it between my driver side door and seat for easy access while driving through the farm. Even shouldered it a few times looking for groundhogs while on my way to the fishing hole.
This was no BR setup shooting for groups, but a lax day out fishing with my brother and some plinking in between. Got to get out of the house from Cabin Fever!
More when I can take it and put it on bags. From using it today though, I am happy with how it's working out.
It's not pretty, but if I wanted that I would mount up some Lams or other stock sets 8) It's all about utility and workable. Plus it feels great when shouldered and is comfortable...kinda like another firearm I can think of  :-\:-X ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D

Like was mentioned Choate has the screws

I bought some a while back and they were like $1.58 or so each

You have to shorten them for other stocks but its easy.

Forgot to mention

I did something like this today

Took my 410 Pardner that I shortened to 19" barrel and put the Survivor fore end on the front and the ATI collapsible AR stock on the back

Pretty comfortable and very packable.

Also put my home made charmer stock on my 12 gauge Pardner that I cut back to 19" (overall is 27")

Figure it will be different to shoot

Hi All

Here are some of the ones that I made up with different parts

This is a 12 gauge I cut back to 19" and added the Survivor stock and fore end

410 with survivor fore end and AR type stock

This is my baby.  223 youth model with 20 gauge extra barrel all carried in a NEF case.

I love the adaptability of the Handi

I guess it kinda does huh? Except with the barrel 5x as thick and of course a non auto ;D It really is handy. I can't wait to see how it feels after the barrel goes to the smith for a cut and crown. Shoud be nice and light. I might just look around and trade this one for a 20" SuperLight Hornet barrel...

Kid- those are some great pics.
How does that ATI stock hold up to the recoil? I have to admit I have actually never seen or held one in person, so I can't honestly say how durable or tough it is. Just what I have read here.
And that is a nice little 223 Youth combo, how versatile is that 8) How does that little 223 barrel shoot for you?

Hi

The ATI stock has worked well so far

I had it on a 12 gauge for a while and it was ok but I didnt shoot it much

Figured I would put it on the 410 for a less chance of collapse under recoil

Only bad thing is it is difficult to get the proper cheek weld for aiming

The 223 is fun and accurate.  Never really benched it but it hits well.

Here is my 12 gauge charmer(cant wait to try it)

Ought ta be a hoot

I believe if I can find a used one I will pick up a Tamer buttstock to give a try. I have had a want ad in the classifieds for a while now looking around for one. I might have to just pick up a new one, seems people really like them that own and shoot them.
That little 12ga s TNT in your hand bro :o Cool though. Let us know how it shoots.

Well I shot it tonight

Not the type of shotgun you sight down the barrel much ::)

Number 7 birdshot from the hip stung a little but bearable

Magnum buckshot just hurt ;D

I guess not bro :o ;D Still pretty cool though.
Well I was able to shoot out a couple rounds before work today. I had to keep watch on the wind as lately it will be very eratic and I was making some adjustments...It's not as nice as what my 223 Ultra will do, but It's ok for a first try with a new stock set up and fighting the wind.
