Michigan Survival Flight
« on: June 12, 2007, 06:48:40 PM »
Not sure how many folks on this page have heard about the disaster that happened last Monday hear in Michigan.  We had an air medical crew crash into lake Michigan last Monday.  The crew was from The University of Michigan Medical Center.  They went to Milwauke to recover lungs from a patient who was to be a donor.  On the return trip back to Michigan, the plane went down.  It crashed into Lake Michigan shortly after takeoff.  As of today, they have found 2 bodies.  They believe they are the 2 pilots.  Still missing are the 2 Organ Transplant specialist and the 2 surgeons who we on board. The The 2 surgeons we Dr. Dave Ashburn and Dr. Martin Spoor. Martin was a very humble and family oriented man.  You could not have asked to work with a better person.  Dave was a good ol southern boy from Tennesee Who loved turkey and waterfoul hunting almost as much as he loved his 3 kids.  I worked very closely with both Martin and Dave as I am an RN in the Cardio-Thoracic ICU in which they worked.  Please, if you can, go to the University of Michigan web page and direct yourselves to the Survival Flight link  and read about  these great men that we lost.  Thanks for your  time.  Please give our guys a look see on the web page and remember all that we do to try and save a life.  I can give a few more details if you would like.

I live within a few miles of the crash site (right off of the Milwaukee lakefront) and was dismayed at the news as it developed.  Premature death by any means is always sad, but to have it happen while the folks were trying to save a life makes it worse.  All six are in my thoughts as is the person the organs were to go to.  Thanks for sharing this.
