marlin 336 all calibers and styles for 1948 models ?
« on: April 03, 2007, 03:46:24 PM »
;D i picked up a letter e 336 in a sporting carbine 3/4 tube 32 special wow what a gun action is smooth, wood is matted perfect. true workmanship blows my 2002 336 30-30 out of the water a better made gun which will be 60 years old next year.Anyway i thought it would be cool to collect e series rifles and get one of each cal and style for 1948 I KNOW CRAZY IDEA so does anyone know all the callebers and styles for just that first year for the 336 or where i could go to find out.

I THINK I AM HOOKED ON THESE OLD LEVER ACTIONS.

THANKS

Don"t use all caps.  It makes it hard to read and looks like you are yelling.

I don't know how to get you the information you ask.  If it is out there someone here on the board will know and post it.  Not everyone comes here every day, so hang on and see what happens.

got to agree with you. Ive got my dads old 336adl its a 3030 24 inch barrel half mag gun with checkered stock. This gun feels so much more solid then any new marlin and is as smooth as the guns ive had action work on. It was made before the microgroves came out and the gun will easily shoot 1.5 inch at 100 yards and to me has about the sexiest lines of any lever gun ive handled. They should have took a look at this old gun when they came out with that xlr as the looks of this one puts those stainless guns to shame!

I believe my book on the 336 is in the office.  If no one has been able to answer you I'll check it on Monday.  To my recollection it was only available in .30-30 and .32 Special, possibly in .35 Remington.  I'll let you know.

Okay Michman,

I have Doug Murray's book, "The 336, a collector's reference on the Model 336 Marlin" in front of me now.  You can order it from him at 20 Polo Lane, Westbury, NY 11590.

Anyway, the first year of manufacture for the 336 was 1948 (prior to that it was the model 36) so you have one of the first of the model.  It came out in .30-30 and .32 Winchester.  Four versions were made that year.  There was the carbine with micro-groove rifling, the 336-SC or Sporting Carbine with Ballard rifling, the 336-A rifle with 24" barrel and Ballard rifling, and the 336-ADL which was the same as the 336-A but with checkering and a sling w/ swivels.

Hope this helps.  Good luck in your search!

Doug Murray also advertises in Shotgun News, or at least he did when I ordered my books from him.  He has one on the Winchester 88 and the Savage 99 also.

Look for his ad in Shotgun News, and there should be a website or phone number.  The book only has his address.
