405 military
« on: March 14, 2007, 07:03:40 PM »
I have shot the 405 gr flat base bullets in my 1874 Pedersoli 45/70 and got several rounds key holeing {wisleing down range} what do you all think of the 405 with a hollow base you think the extra lenth would help to stableise the bullet ? Is there a 500 gr self cleaning govermint bullet ? More questands later ;D

Check the Pedersoli web site, I think the twist is 1-18. If so you will need to use the 500 gr military bullet. I have a Pedersoli 1863 Sharps and it will not shoot the 300 gr 45-90 bullet or the 405 gr military bullet. With the 500 gr Army bullet it's a tack driver (it's also a shoulder buster off the bench).

1st thing to do is slug the bore to measure its diameter, then match up a bullet to that diameter.

Over- or undersized bullets can cause the effects described.

If you ever shot copper through that rifle you must get all the copper out or that bullet will keep "wisleing down range"

I'm not sure what you mean by self-cleaning bullet....so I'll leave that alone.

The Lyman mold # 457125 is a 520 gr. (from my mold and alloy), round nose, bore riding bullet and I've had great success with it in every 45 cal. rifle I've used it in.  I also understand it's a very close copy of the original govt. bullet.

When you slug the bore it will be .458.  I've slugged so many of these bores, well, monotany comes to mind.
