Squirrels before the storm
« on: January 20, 2007, 10:17:41 AM »
I live in the middle of the Missouri Ozarks.  I have an office with woods on three sides of it close to the Mark Twain National forest.  On any given day we are usually up to our knees in squirrels.  Every day I take a large soft drink container and fill it with whole corn.  I throw this around the cleared area just outside my office where I can watch the little beggars out of my window.  We supposedly have a winter storm moving in later this evening and night and I haven’t seen a squirrel all day.  I would have thought they would have been out working extra hard to get food before the snow and ice hits.  Instead where I often see 7 or 8 squirrels at a time now there seem to be none.  What has been your experience with squirrels before a winter storm?

Seems like all of the game that feeds, or predators that hunt, have a built-in barometer and will hit it hard with the edge of the front being almost on top of them...The Squirrels seem to be the most likely to be prepared as they are always busy with food storage and keeping their nest in top condition. I think that they feel the front coming no more, nor no less than the other critters but have the advantage of retiring early because of guaranteed food storage.
Meanwhile...the large mouth bass quietly slips into deeper water.
