Scope for Handi .223
« on: March 16, 2007, 07:11:18 AM »
I bought a Handi-Rifle .223 bull barrel model SB2-323. yesterday. I need a reasonably priced scope. My shooting will be off a bench at 100 yds. and just punching holes in paper. I need a scope that will let me see .223 holes at this range. I'm consideriong a Mueller APV 4.5x14x40. Will this work for me or is there a better choice in the same price range? Also, what height rings do I need to  mount a X40 AO scope?

For only about $100 I put a Simmons WTC (Whitetail Calssic) on my H&R .223. It is a 6.5x20x50 and it works great, it's optics are far better than Bushnells that I have checked out, I do not think you can come close to this (these) scopes for the money, and they come with an american lifetime warranty!!!. I used medium height Millet Angle Loc rings to mount the TDC on my Handirifle and it shoots excellently and I have never had a problem with the scope or the rings. There a couple of members here here that dislike the Millet Angle Loc rings intensely and prefer others, however my PERSONAL expierence with them has been great and my opinion is not based on seconf hand stories and heresay, there other good rings also. If you use a little common sense and mechanical understanding when installing the Milllet Angle Loc rings they are wonderful. I also have a couple of more sets of the same rings on higher recoiling rifles with different scopes and they have continued to work well with no problems...<><.... :)

My 223 BB started with a Bushnell 3x9x40 and now wears a Barska 6x24x50 , i am pleased with both scopes but the 3x9 did not give me enough power to see the holes @ 100 ( old eyes ) and as far as rings , all i use are Weaver X-tall , shorter will work for scope to hammer clearance but i need them to get proper cheek weld to the stocks .

I put a tasco world class 3x9 on mine. yes, a tasco, but it was cheap and works just fine. I don't need to see in the dark or impress my friends. you can reload a lot of shells or new tires for the price difference in a tasco and a leupold. heck, you can buy a spotting scope too and still be under SImmons price. if all you are doing is punching paper in good light it should be fine. I also have a custom job savege 110L with a nice redfield scope etc etc on it and don't shoot it any better than my inexpensive handi and cheap scope.  Just my opinion though.

Make that three votes for the Simmons WTC.   I have one mounted on my .280 Remington barrel and my experience has been the same as MSP's and Poncaguys.   My WTC is bright and clear and has held up well thus far.

I've had the same Simmons .22 Mag scope on my 10/22 rifle for over seven years now with no problems what so ever.

I've also had Tasco's go to pieces on me, and the Bushnells may be just fine but they seem clunky and cheap looking to me so I have avoided them.

I also have a cheap tasco. 4-12x40
I have only shot <100 rounds but works fine so far.
Don't remember what brand mounts but they are about 1 3/4" over bore center.
(high 2" rings in picture)
Could be lower but the power ring hammer would touch.

I put the same Barska scope on mine as Stimpy has. Sportsmans Guide puts them on sale for around 50 bucks, rings, lense covers and sunshade included. It has a mil dot reticule and pretty good optics.I've had it for about 1 yr now and have no complaints.
