I just got a Winchester M1 Garand

I am now the proud owner of my grandpa's M1 Garand. By the numbers I see it was made April 1944. Is there any way to see by the numbers if the gun saw duty? It is in very good shape. When I took it appart the inside looked great. The barrel had a little rust in it. It cleaned up well. Now I have to figure out how to load and shoot the thing.  Ron
