I have to agree with KYODE! I have been shooting a 2x7 Burris on my unbraked 358JDJ for over 8yrs. Never a problem. I have a new 3x9 acculok on an unbraked '06 and only shoot heavy 180's and 200's out of it now for over 2 years. Still looks great and still works. Maybe it's just me, but I even have so real cheapo Tasco 30mm 3x and 4x, simmons, Bushnell, and of course 5 Leupolds and I never broke one. I still think the secret is multiple (at least 3) rings to prevent scope-tube flex. They can flex alot under heavy recoild, and this is what makes them fail. Extra rings add weight , but that's not all bad.

BTW- I use my Leupolds when the chips are down and an Elk hunt is in the wind. I actually prefer fixed powers for hunting. If big game can't be seen with a 4x, it's way too far for a clean handgun kill. Even then, it may be depending on your skill. It's only my opinion, I could be wrong. Small game and varmits are another matter--but who hunts them? just kidding. Variables and higher powers do have a place, just not for me when durability matters and the weather can turn very cold and snowy.
Good luck with your Burris scopes. I'll keep my old 1x-4x, 2 x7 and new 3x9.
