Choose 45-70 over 30-30
« on: February 25, 2007, 04:29:26 PM »
If you own a 45-70 you don't need a 30-30. They are more accurate and can be loaded way down to suit your level of recoil tolerance. Great caliber. ;D

....If you own a 45-70 you don't need a 30-30....

Apples and oranges. Try again to make your point. (Actually, none of us NEED either. When was the last time you NEEDED to go kill your dinner?) Go study the definitions of NEED and WANT.

A nice 30-30 & a nice 45-70 in a sweet shooting single shot is a great pair that compliments each other I think...One can get by in life with only 1 gun..but who the hecks wants to ;)

...yes, I need to kill my dinner....I don't particularly like eating it on the hoof.
...there are many kinds of wounded, and only one kind of dead. Do it the Handi way, one shot, one kill.

What I am saying is that the 45-70 will do everything that the 30-30 will do and then some. As far as my use of the word 'need' I am assuming we are all Handi-holics or on the way to becoming one. It's harder to become one in Canada because of availability problems and no barrel program. No stock in Canada in 45-70 except a couple of BC's. ;D

PS. And what is need but want stretched over time. ;D

I have to agree with everyone else since I have both!  But then you bring up that Canadian thing...that is a drag with no barrel program.  Tell ya what we'll do, we will send (2) liberals to Canada in a straight up trade for you.  Move here, vote pro gun, join the NRA how's that!? ;D

The problem is I am a Liberal though I don't agree with some of their recent policies.(I should explain before I unleash a torrent of scorn, a Liberal in Canada is not necessarily liberal. Liberal does not equate to Democrat in the U.S. The Liberal Party of Canada is in the center drawing from the right and left since 1867)

What I NEED is more time so I can go shooting as much as I WANT!!!

I think I understand the difference between want and need perfectly.

Cabin fever is setting in big-time with me up here in Canada. I haven't been able to get out and shoot for over a month and I am feeling the strain. Looking forward to an early spring ::)

Q, I like your attitude! Just got out this morning for the first time in six weeks, due to the extreme cold followed by heavy snow we had here. Now it's sunny and in the forties, a muddy mess, but I had some trigger time, so I'm happy.

Judging by your photo, you are recently back from overseas. Everyone here will join me in thanking you for your service! Glad you're home safe and sound!

Actually, after I got my .38-55 I found I don't NEED either the .30-30 or the .45-70 I have.  ;)

No matter what I have or how many I have,  I still NEED my .357!  ;D

While I have both calibers and never really thought about it until now.....I started hunting groundhogs with a 30-30 loaded with 110 grain HP at about 2500+ fps.  While the 30-30 is not as flat shooting as a 220 Swift it sure has a lot less bullet drop at 200 yards than a 45-70.

BTW a 30-06 loaded with a 110 grain bullet really work well on groundhogs too!  I'm only guessing but I think the velocity was about 3200+ fps.

The Hornady round that I"m using is almost flat from 50 to 125yrds. At 200 I aimed at the top of a 1 ltr coke bottle hitting about 4" low standing with the sling wraped around a small tree. I know the BC isn't as good as a true tack driver but it's fast, heavy and fun for me anyway. ;D

To db22, The photo is of an old one from me in Desert Storm on Scud watch with the 101st. I talk to service members serving now in Iraq and Afganistan and the picture helps break the ice. Thanks for the good words I do the same for them when I meet them.
