22 K-hornet initial testing - does it go bang?
« on: March 18, 2007, 06:14:09 PM »
Finally got the the k-hornet out for a test drive.  And yes it still goes bang, all I had was 50 m and the loads were anything but tuned I just picked the max load of lil gun and loaded up some rounds.  I tried remington bulk 45's sierra 50 gr blitz and Nosler 50 gr bt's. I was concerned about stabablizing the longer bullets but there was no sign of instability. Oddly enough the remington bulks were not so good the sierra's were better but the noslers showed some real promise. 5 shots 3 holes, the 2 elongated holes were .5 apart.

I was fighting with the gun a fair bit today. I don't know if it is true or not but it seems like the synthetic is longer than the wood handi stock but I most definitly had a hard time getting confortable on the bench with that gun today.  I have got a youth stock on the way which is a good thing because if it felt long to me it will be unmanageable for the boys.

I have to admit I was concerned had what was a decent shooting gun survived the conversion and it looks like it has.

Step 2 real load testing.

aulrich:  Would you mind telling me who re-worked your Hornet to the K Hornet?  I am thinking about doing the same thing and would prefer to use a gunsmith who has some experience rechambering Handis.  Also, what was the charge for upgrade?  Thanks.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.

It was just a local guy, this conversion was basically one of the more simple and any compentant smith or good homer can do that one (I probably could have done it but chikened out).

Anything more complicated other than the guy that has done Quick's and other conversions I am not sure.

stimpylu32  with the 218 bee being so close to the hornet are you planning to try some lil'gun, the 22 mag as a donner should net you a much cleaner chamber though the twist is a question I'll have to check the FAQ.  The bee is another round that is well suited to a handi application.

pagris,

Wayne York has done a bunch of Handi/Ultra rechambers and rebores for members here, he charges $50 to$100 for a rechamber depending on what needs to be done and if ejector/extractor works needs to be done. I would think the K-hornet would be one of the $50 rechambers.

The 22 mag barrel will work well for the Bee , it was a little more meat than i was willing to try to remove at home by hand so off to Wayne it went , hes also reworking the ejector for me , should run about $100 + shipping .

Ya i am going to try some L-gun and H110 and maybe some Unique with cast bullets just for kicks and i can reload the bee cheaper than i can buy 22 mags .

The mag barrel has a 1 in 16 twist and a .24 dia. that will be good for the lighter 22 cal bullets .
