according to Remington a 55 grain bullet zeroed at 200 yards will drop 8.1 inches at 300 yards

Believe it or not. differnt barrels like differnt ammo. You will have to shoot difernt ones till you find one it likes. ;D

I am not sure on groundhogs but on Prairie Dogs, which are smaller than ground hogs, I believe some were taken at over 400 yards in Hooker last year. I am sure someone that was there and either was the trigger man or witnessed the event will speak up. 452 yards on a PD seems to sound familiar to me for some reason....<><.... :)

P.S. - yes they are accurate....and since the Winchester White Box 40 round and 50 round value packs are hard to find now I suggest trying some Remington 55 grain Core Loct HP's. But just as Dale said, different guns like different ammo so try some different stuff in your gun. Ground hogs at 200-300 yards should be no problem but for 300 yards you may want a bit bigger scope on a small target....<><.... :)

I've noticed that .223 is real scarece and relatively pricey right now. still cheaper than .204, but not as cheap as it used to be. I bought a 223 to shoot factory, but was forced to reload because I couldn't enjoy shooting that cost that much. not that reloading is a bad thing, I just hadn't planned on it in 223.

I hit one at 526 per the LRF last year with my BB 223 , granted it took 3 shots to walk it in with the wind , but a P-dog is a whole bunch smaller than a grounghog .  ;D

Mine likes the 55gr Remingtons and my 55gr V-Max handloads , i never could get it to shoot the 45gr WWB very well .

I will have to admit that it was probably more luck than skill and most shots were in the 250 to 300 range , it will on most days if i do my part keep the groups well under 1"@ 200 . To say that i am very pleased with this rifle would be an under statement .  ;)

I do have a 22-250 for the longer shots now and it also likes the 55gr bullets .

So far, every 223 Handi that I have shot has been accurate. I believe that it is one of the more consistanly accucate chamberings in that rifle.

...you lay a MilDot scope on top of a .223, you can reach quite a ways, seen vids of 800 yd shots on metal 4" targets, then again, it was hotter/heavier loads.
...there are many kinds of wounded, and only one kind of dead. Do it the Handi way, one shot, one kill.

This weekend I shot 1 ragged hole at 100 yards with 6 shots.  I was using handloads (26 grains of powder with 50 grain speer soft point bullets.)  I also shot at 275 yards with winchester white box 45 grain hollow points.  We hung up a 6" frying pan at that distance and I hit it every time I shot.  I thought that was pretty good for factory stuff.

mine loved the black hills in 55 gr. vmax.  I have not hit anything over 200 yds, but the .223 is great with the right ammo.

As for the post concerning the price of ammo. You will see most all ammo going up this year due to the price of metals used in manufacturing the cases.
Also, you may find that .223 and .22-250 ammo may be hard to find.
I carry a single shot.
'cause it only takes one shot.
