.358 Winchester and the BLR
« on: June 05, 2007, 01:16:19 PM »
I wanted to know what kind of velocities you guys are getting in the 20" BLR I chrony some loads this weekend and got an average of 2366 FPS with Winchester factory 200 grain silver tips. With 45.0 grains of IMR3031 behind  Remington 200 PSPCL bullets i am averaging 2400 fps and outstanding accuracy . And my BLR shoots its best  groups using 42.0 grains of IMR3031 with Hornady 250 grain bullets at 2100 FPS I was hoping to get 2200 fps with the 250 but if i cant 2100 will do just fine for my needs . So what are you BLR owners getting?

So far in the BLR the  best loading I've found is AA2520 which seems to give superior results in the BLR's 20 inch tube.  48.0 grain, yes this is a compressed load, behind a Hornady 250 grain bullet loaded to an over all length of 2.760 has been giving me 2370.  Note this barrel was carefully lapped with bore lapping compound on 160 grain 357 cast revolver bullets.  Most of the other people I've talked to that are using this same load say they are getting between 2,300 and 2,350 fps with this loading.

I have been advised by many on this and other forums to try the 225 grain bullets. I am going to take there advise and give them a try I just ordered some 225 Sierra SBT';s and according to Sierra in a  20" BLR  2400 and 2450 fps can be easily reached. I only plan to use the Sierra to see if i can achieve 2400 fps and if i can i'll switch to Nosler Partitions. It seams that the BC of .430 with the Nosler would work to 250 yards and beyond. Thanks for everyones help  Ill give a range report next month and let you guys knoiw hoiw the 225's worked out. Tanoose

The only load I chronographed in my BLR (since sold) was 49 grs of 4320 with the 225 gr Sierra in Win 308 brass w/ CCI 200's. It averaged right at 2400 fps and was very accurate.

I primarily use W748 in my BLR in .358.  I think the barrel is 19" long, but I may not be measuring it accurately.

With 200 grain bullets I can get 2450 fps (I got 2540 with one powder batch many years ago, but haven't been able to duplicate it since).

With 225 grain bullets, I'm getting about 2340 fps, but I haven't pushed the envelope.

I've loaded to the gills 748 with all grain weights and coronographed them in my 20" blr. 200 grn loads will give you 2550
220's will give you 2450 easily and 250 grn can be driven to 2370  But the loads are heavily compressed and can only be found in the 1st edition of the barnes reloading manual. imr 3031 also works well.
