Contender barrel extender
« on: April 09, 2007, 12:14:15 PM »
I have a great old Super 14 barrel in 44 Mag that I'd like to legally extend to the 16" minimum in order to create a short, handy carbine. Is there an economical, functional, and practical way to do this by a fairly handy guy at home? If not, can anyone recommend a shop that routinely provides this service?

I have a Super 14 in .222 that someone converted to a legal rifle barrel by welding on a 3 inch flash hider.  Apparently whatever you put on has to be permanent, so welding or soldering would work.  It can't be screwed off.  I don't know what is commercially available, but if nothing else you could most likely make one if you have access to a lathe.  Good luck with this.

Thanks Keith. I knew that the extension had to made permanent. I thought that someone used to manufacture a flash suppressor that could be permanently mounted, but I haven't seen one in a long time.

Thanks for the tip about the campingsurvival.com site. I ordered one of their Contender barrel extender/flash suppressors. Their position is that the mount doesn't need to be permanent unless a folding stock is used. They promised to send a copy of the Federal regulation which allows this interpretation. I'm somewhat skeptical but I'm going to check it out. If I have any questions then I'll just solder it on to be safe.

I suspect they are saying that if you use it on a pistol stock you don't have to weld on their extension.  If you use a shoulder stock (folding or fixed) and you don't have it permanently attached you run the risk of having a new roomie who has things in mind for you that you may have never wanted.  I don't think it is worth the risk.

I think with these extentions you need to remove the front sight and use the screw holes from that plus a couple set screws to hold it on.  As far as the feds   if you can figure out there regulations your doing well   but I agree no need in buckin them   they are always right..

I was told by the feds if you can unscrew the extension, whether the barrel end is threaded or by removing screws such as sight screws, it doesn't make it.  They were quite forceful about welding or soldering, but they didn't close the door completely on some type of permanent adhesive.  They want to make sure that you don't make a short barreled rifle that can be hid under a coat and snuck into the bank you want to rob.  That you can have the same gun with a pistol stock and it is legal with a short barrel doesn't make much sense, but the feds are the feds, and the law is the law.
