50 BMG Question
« on: December 03, 2006, 04:16:36 PM »
I'm planning on getting a 50 Bmg for my old man but cant decide which one. I have about $3,000 to spend. I was looking at http://www.watsonsweapons.com/50bolt.htm
and
http://www.statearms.com/bigbertha.html

Does anybody have any feedback about them or any experience. Besides them are there any other recomendations.. Thankyou.

I had a Ferret50 and it was a tack driver, I had a Leupold IV on it.  The only reason I sold it was, I did not have a place to shoot it any longer.

I'd suggest the heavy bull barrel.  The weight helps make the recoil "managable".

There are not many light 50 BMG's out there. I the Ferret I had weighed 20 pounds and the Hess I had weighed 31 pounds. The break design also helps a lot in felt recoil.

I was thinking of buying one also but there is no place to shoot around me. I wanted to get one before they're banned in Illinois.

In this particular case, the Watson's is offered in an 18 lb "lite" version and a 38 lb "bull barrel" configuration.

http://www.watsonsweapons.com/50bolt.htm

Specifications
Caliber    .50 BMG (Browning Machine Gun)
Weight    18lbs approx. (modular & light weight versions)
38lbs approx. (bull barreled version)

Barrel Length    30" (modular & light weight versions)
35" (bull barreled version).
Starting from $2350.00*

In this case, heavy is good IMO........

With my 20 pound Ferret 50 BMG I was able to shoot it off my shoulder standing up. The recoil was no worse that a 12 gauge slug gun. I had a shark grill muzzle break installed on it. It had a 18 inch barrel. The only thing that bothered me was the muzzle blast. I had to wear a towel around my face because the hot gasses were being forced back to my face and rushing up my nose. Not enough to burn or hurt you , but enough to not want to shoot it with out some kind of face protection. But my 30 inch Hesse did not do that. It was a blast shooting it. The 50 BMG is designed as a bench or ground shot gun. Yes the more weight the less felt recoil, but a good muzzle break will do wonder's for the felt recoil as well.

The Serbu is a really good rifle. It has about the best muzzlebrake you can ge on one. It weighs about 26 pounds and has very little recoil.. You can find them for about $2400 with the bipod on Gunbroker.

Of course that is just your opinion.  Serbu does make a good 50 BMG, but the Ferret is also a good barrel and the break is every bit as effective. I know I have shot quit a few 50 BMG's

Yea that is my opinion on the gun and break just like the Ferret having a good brake is your opinion. I have shot a few BMG's myself.  Excuse me for trying to help.  :o

Crazy Horse, don't get upset. No use ruffling your feathers, I was not trying to take anything away from your post.  Besides the original thread is well over a year old. If you really want a quality 50 BMG get a Barrett.  ;D
