Accuracy? Maybe maybe not, I do not own a Savage model 40. But I do have a Handi 22 hornet superlight. It shoots .502, 3 shot groups at 100 yards using 35 g Vmaxes over 13 grains of Lil gun. I also have a savage 110 in 223 that has turned in .3 inch groups using 60 grain Vmaxes. I gues I'd buy the gun that appealed to me most. Or even better Both.

I own both a Handi (22-250 Ultra Varmint) and a couple of Savages ( 110FP TActical  in 30-06 & a Striker in 243) The handi's are a nice shooting gun sometimes. Some Handi's are finicky! So if you don't like to tinker etc. Go with the Savage. My handi with hand loads is shooting  1/2 MOA groups @ 100, the Striker is less than dime size  while using a bi-pod. The 110FP is a "Hole Puncher". My choice, Savages all the way. thats why they are consistantly rated the most accurate gun out of the box, year after year. I have also owned many Remingtons etc. My choice is still the savage! They aren't the prettiest, but they are an EXCELLENT firearm for the money. Hope it helps.

I was a Savage skeptic, but I now am a believer!  They are extremely accurate, especially with the Accu-trigger. They are a great value. I think that the quicker lock time over the handi, may contribute to better accuracy, at least for me.  I now own three... a heavy barrel 22-250, a 300 WSM, and a heavy barrel 17 HMR.  They consistently out-shoot rifles worht three times as much, and I don't have to worry about dinging up an expensive walnut stock.  My vote is for the Savage.

If you like to tinker with things buy the Handi, I have had some, and I just did a barrel stub conversion of one to 30 Carbine, but don't bet on them being accurate.  If you want a rifle that shoots out of the box then get the Savage, I have one of them also (17 Remington), they are the best bet for an accurate rifle with no tinkering.  Larry
