Anyone hunt near Orr?
« on: March 19, 2007, 10:01:27 AM »
Every November since 1999, me and a buddy throw our duds and a couple of Handi-rifles in my camper and head to Cusson just north of Orr and camp in the Kabetogema for 10 days or so. Shot some nice whitetails, met some nice people, and made a few friends up in northern Manysodas. The Shermer family that is involved in logging were working in our AO the one year and visited with us quite a bit. They are out of the Greaney and Gheen areas.

That area is kinda like the last frontier. Not much traffic and after you turn off 53 it gets awfully remote fairly fast. After Sunday of the opening weekend we have the woods pretty much to ourselves.

Though I'm a resident of Cheeseville the trip to Manysodas is the highlight of the year for me.

I hunt near there around crane lake.  There are deffinately some big bucks up there.  I think the wolves have been doing a number on them the last few years though.  This was the first year I didnt get one, didnt even see a buck in six days of hunting.  I got a 11 during slug season and a 7 during muzzelloader in southern mn this year, so that made up for it.

Visited Crane Lake a couple of times, and like the feeling of "getting to the end of the road" Took a little trip back in by Johnson Lake as well. Next time I'm going to turn onto the Echo Trail. Met a guy who has a camp on Big Lake, while having pizza at Norway Point Resort on Pelican Lake. I might have to go look him up next trip.

The logging family indicated that bigger bucks are always spotted around the area from Buyck up to Crane Lake.

I hunt with a slug gun in my home area here in Wisconsin. I use a scoped NEF Tracker II with saboted slugs. Not to bad of a rig and it kills deer with rifle like accuracy.
