rem. 20 slug bbl. - LW now F/S
« on: April 30, 2007, 05:42:17 AM »
I found in a pawnshop (and bought) a  Remington 870 20 gauge barrel, fully rifled with rifle sights (no cantilever).  Good condition, looks parkerized like for an 870 Express.   Marked Remington.    Has a star, then 20 GA 2 3/4" OR 3"  FULLY RIFLED
My question is - How do I know if it's for a regular 870 or LightWeight?
I read a quarter should pass through the mag. tube band for a standard 870, and it does not.
THANKS

If the barrel is fully rifled, it's for a lightweight. The standard weight  barrels ceased production in 1977 and a fully rifled barrel was never made by remington for the standard weight 20 gauge, they only had the smooth bore slug barrels. This applies to 1100's as well as 870's. Whenever there is any doubt as to wether it's a lightweight or standard weight 20 gauge barrel, if a quarter will pass through the barrel lug for the magazine tube, it's a standard weight barrel, if a quarter won't go thru, it's a lightweight barrel.

Thanks Wink Man.   That's pretty much what I had concluded from looking around the 'net.
Much appreciated.
