Ive had and have shoot good and bad by everyone of them. For the most part there all good guns. In a full sized gun my choise would be a colt gold cup. Preferably a 70 series. If not a newer production 80 series. Ive owned two 80 series guns and theyve both been great guns. The one in the safe now is probably the most reliable 1911 ive ever owned and one of the most accurate.

Bigboar:

My recommendation is that you identify which is the most important to you, then pick a gun that's well suited to that top priority. For example, if you want it for carry, do you want it for concealed carry or police duty carry or as a gun to keep under the counter in your business? If it's for target, then what kind of targets? Is this formal target shooting or informal target shooting? Formal target shooting usually favors certain makes and models and configurations. If it's for hunting, then I think you're choosing the wrong gun, but if you insist on using a 1911 to hunt something, then at least get a gun with adjustable sights.

The only problem with having so many choices is that it just takes a little longer to shop.

I like Sigs but since you don't want to hear about them ---
I would suggest you consider STI--far more reliable-out of the box- and a lot of choices, not to consider the very good construction and parts.

with my experience i'd say get a springfield, or kimber, or a wilson if you can afford it ;D
I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?"
Well, to tell the truth I shoot a Springfield XD so it doesnt really matter.

The new Colt's seem to be made quite well. A friend of mine got a new S&W and it has been 100% reliable for him. If you want to spend a bit more money, Rock River Arms is nice.

I have built a lot of 1911 since 1976 Colt Series 70s then the 80s, Springfield, and messed with a few of the older Hardballer's. Until a coulpe of years ago my carry pistols were a Series 80 Combat Commander  and a Springfiield  1911 Goverment model. Both of the pistols I had re-built from ground up with Bill Wilson parts. However, during that time I had purchased a mis-order from a friend of mine in the form of a Kimber Custom TLE II new in the box. This gun laid in my safe for about a year without being fired. Then my two boys showed up for a visit and wanted to shoot my pistols and or course dad's ammo. I took the Kimber along and shot it for the first time. Later a few weeks later a couple of guys that had been wanting me to build carry pistols for them ran into me again and I sold them my Springfield and my Colt. Why? Because I had neglected puting night sights on either of them. THIS Kimber is as reliable as any pistol I have ever built and mine are. My son's were upset but, I told them I could duplicate the two pistols anytime but, I haven't seen a need to for my own personal use. I have retired from my tactical duties in Law Enforcement and now deal in real estate on a small basis so NO! I don't sell Kimbers. However, I would bet my life on this one if I was still in the business, and may have to someday anyway. I did clean the trigger up on this one but other-wise its stock. Colt is over-priced in my opinion and the Sprinfield slide (unless they've changed it) is a little thicker than the Kimber. It just feels better.  I hear the Smiths are good but, I don't know this. You can get a loaded out Charles Daley pretty cheap but, I personally would have someone go thru it completely before I'd bet the farm on it.Good luck, ;)

Let me start by saying I don't think the 45acp is a good hunting cartridge, maybe ok to carry if a finishing shot is needed but not hunting for deer size game.  I own S&Ws and Kimbers, have had great luck with them both are reliable and shoot much better than the average shooter.  Considering all of the Kimbers that have been sold in the last 10 years, you do not see many in the used gun counters, I think this says a lot about them.  Also there are many variations to choose from.

good shooting

Bigboar, I believe Kimber gives you about the most for your money in a new gun. I have 5 of them, 4 in 45acp and 1 in 10mm. I have a ultra carry and a pro carry, the others are full size. 3 are series 1 and 2 are series 2. They are all completely reliable.

If I had more money to spend I would buy a Les Bear TRS, mine is the comachie hard chrome. To me it is the best feeling best shooting 1911 I have ever owned. Over the years I've owned them all from pre-war colts to customs. For my money the TRS or a kimber gives you the best value for your money. Regards, Byron ;D

If I was to buy a 45 just for shooting, I'd go out and find a S&W 4506. That has to be the most comfortable 45 I've ever shot. If I recall, it was too big and heavy for CC, and had a lot of gizmos on it, although maybe my memory has become fuzzy over the years. The traditional 1911 grip frame is a bit too narrow for my hands.

If it had to be a 1911-style, and it was mainly for targets, I'd go with a used Dan Wesson, if I could find a good one. Second choice would be an older Colt. If it had to be new, and a CCW, I'd go for the Sprinfield GI model with the short barrel. I saw one for $400 a couple of years ago. Perhaps we've lost sight of the attraction of the 1911: Reliability and low cost. 400 bills is what a 1911 should cost, and S.A. is a company I can trust. If money was no object, I'd spring for a Kimber. The basic, Pro CDP 2 or Pro Carry 2, whichever felt right. I could trust my life with it, and have a great target gun.

I've seen some beautiful S&W 1911s, but never tried one.

At any rate, I suggest googling with some of the models you're interested in and see what complaints long-term users have about them.

Has anyone shot a High Standard 1911.
If so, what do you think?
Which 1911  offers adjustible sights?
For hunting or self defense against a bear what is the max bullit weight and powder charge for reloading?

I don't care for FULLY adjustable sights on 1911s because I shoot only one load. However, I can see the advantage if you change bullet weights ect occasionally. I would also think it might be cheaper to buy a fully adjustable rear sight AFTER-MARKET rather than factory but, this may not be true. As for bear. What kind of bear? Little black ones, or great big brown ones. If it's the big brown ones I would want something a lot bigger (power wise) than a 45acp. Like a short rifle or a 44mag.

I personally have a Colt Series 80 Combat Government model that I poured LOTS of money into in the 1980's so I'm keepin' that one.

If I wanted a "NEW" 1911 then there are two types of choices.

#1 is Money-is-no-Obect catagory:  Simple, one answer, LES BAER Premier.

#2 is Best-Value catagory:  Kimber or Springfield Armory.  Flip a coin.

If I was looking in the "USED" rack then a Series 70 Colt Gold Cup.

Just my 2 cents

Colt.
Colt is the original 1911, it will hold its value better than any of the other 1911s mentioned in this thread.  Quality and workmanship is very good and Colt parts are excellent
