If I was to buy a 45 just for shooting, I'd go out and find a S&W 4506. That has to be the most comfortable 45 I've ever shot. If I recall, it was too big and heavy for CC, and had a lot of gizmos on it, although maybe my memory has become fuzzy over the years. The traditional 1911 grip frame is a bit too narrow for my hands.
If it had to be a 1911-style, and it was mainly for targets, I'd go with a used Dan Wesson, if I could find a good one. Second choice would be an older Colt. If it had to be new, and a CCW, I'd go for the Sprinfield GI model with the short barrel. I saw one for $400 a couple of years ago. Perhaps we've lost sight of the attraction of the 1911: Reliability and low cost. 400 bills is what a 1911 should cost, and S.A. is a company I can trust. If money was no object, I'd spring for a Kimber. The basic, Pro CDP 2 or Pro Carry 2, whichever felt right. I could trust my life with it, and have a great target gun.
I've seen some beautiful S&W 1911s, but never tried one.
At any rate, I suggest googling with some of the models you're interested in and see what complaints long-term users have about them.
