Question about Reloading .44 hot shot capsules
« on: March 19, 2007, 12:13:51 PM »
I have collected a several hundred .44 mag hot shot capsules over the years and I'm now ready to start using them.
My questions start with, do the cases need to be fully resized, what primer should I use, how do I "bell the mouth" of each case to faciliate easy loading of the capsule, how much of a crip should I use?

Thanks for any help. If you can't tell I have never reloaded before.

Not sure exactly what you have!
If you have the blue ones with the white base from Speer, all of the reloading instructions are printed on the box!

Resize the case as you normally would for a bullet.
Select your powder charge!  I use 7.0 grains of Unique.
Flare the case mouth to facilitate the capsule going into the brass!
Fill them with shot and install the base wad, then you load them just like they were a regular bullet!
Apply a heavy crimp.

I would not go with a heavy crimp. The ones I have used will crack and separate if you crimp too hard.   KN

I had the same problem with crimping mine to much. They cracked. So I use a slight crimp, just enough to hold it in place.

I've never had one crack, but it obviously can happen.
The ones that I have are from Speer.  They're blue and have a white base wad.
On the bottom of the box it says "Crimp case firmly into capsule."

The T/C hot shot capsules are not the same as the shot shell capsules from speer.
You can use the speer capsules with the hotshot barrels just fine.

you should size the case like normal and you should bell the mouth out a little more then you would with a normal bullet. If the shot capsule catches on the case it will break it and spill the pellets. when you go to the crimp use a firm one not a heavy one just enough to hold the capsule
