stocking up? your thoughts
« on: March 20, 2007, 06:12:53 PM »
the way prices are going lately I really feel the need to stock up on reloading supplies to be able to afford to shoot later, I have been trying to buy some 8 lb bottles of powder and all the bullets I can find. my two questions are: am I just being paranoid or is this wise? I shoot alot so I would almost surely use it. how about picking up 30- 50 lb of mil surplus powder I am thinking especially of Data 68 and 79. they are about $10. a lb. Does anyone have any experience with these two powders? I do mainly varmint shooting in but also have a dozen or so big game rifles. I like some thoughts from other serious reloaders about the future of shooting and loading.

Your not paranoid at all. The last one bitchin' is the first one prepared. I have doing this for awhile now but I don't allow cases to sit around empty. If they are here they are loaded. Alot less chance of them getting damp if they are loaded. Plus when its "return too the alamo" time... I will be ready. ;D  I have buying up brass and bullets off the internet, having all my buddies that don't reload save their brass for me, and if I am at the range and see some brass in good shape. I will pick it up even if it's not something I generally need.( I can always reform it)

3 steps ahead of you.  found a deal on primers; bought them out of what they had.  ordered a bunch of powder, too.   great idea if you ask me.

Sounds like a smart plan, the prices will only keep going up.I stocked up on powder about 15 years ago so am shooting powder that cost $11.50lb even including the shipping cost. The past six months have been stocking up on bullets, brass, and primers.Trouble is I got too many guns to feed, and I load in fifty round lots for each one lol.

Me too! Yesterday I found 2 boxes of Sierra 160gr 7mm Spitzer Boat Tails @5.49 per box in a overlooked moving box in the garage. What a treasure!

I keep quite a bit of powder around, but I'm not sure the local fire department OR my insurance company would approve of my having 50 pounds of powder in the house. I'd be tempted to check the regs on that much. Insurance companies just love any excuse not to pay off.

What is the life expectancy of primers and powder?  I found a sale at Dick's for Winchester shotgun primers a year ago for $0.99 a box.  Bought 2000 for $1.98!  I think it was mismarked.  I have them in a ziplock w/ some of those moisture grabbing tabs.  I am also stocking up on bullets.  I wish I would have bought a bunch of shot years ago when it was $11 for 25lbs, now it is $28 at Gander Mountain!!!! Wow, hardly worth the effort anymore.
