Can you shoot tripple 7 with musket caps ?
« on: March 09, 2007, 05:41:32 AM »
I called hodgen and they said tripple 7 was to be used with 209 primers and pyrodex with caps as it has a lower ingitioin point.  My rifle is a caplock  has anyone tried musket caps with tripple 7 ? what were your results ?

I use RWS flangeless musket caps on 3 inlines with 777, two Black Diamonds and a CVA, they work great!! CCI musket caps work too, that's what I used before I got the RWS, the only reason I switched was the RWS are available without the flange.

You can use regular #11 caps with trip-7 too. That powder fires pretty easily - in comparison with a few other substitue powders. Like always/like with any other powder brand, FFF is the preferred granule size with sidelocks.

I have used #11 caps in my T/C Renegade with triple 7 powder with no problem at all.

I will add here that the hodgdon company might have been referring to triple seven pellets. You will need a 209 primer to set them off properly. Triple seven loose powder in either FFg or FFFg will work fine with the #11 RWS caps and if they work the musket caps will surely work too.

FYI,
I was playing around once, at the range, with my TC Renegade using the #11 RWS caps and loaded some pryodex pellets and it shot off more than once.  I did have a couple of misfires and had to pull the nipple and put a small amount of loose powder in the nipple channel then replace and fire it off.  Don't do this when hunting,,not recommended!!

I use FFF Triple 7 in my CVA bobcat all the time, in fact thats the only powder I have ever used in it. #11 caps seem to ingnite it great. I've even used it in competition and fired over 100 shots without cleaning using it. I'm thinking they were thinking of the pellets.

Even #11s worked fine in my caplock....until I tried to fire it below freezing.  I'm not sure of the exact temp at which the problem started, but by 20F it was only firing about half the time.

Musket caps I would trust though I didn't try them.

I should have made my self a little clearer. I was refering to the 777 pellets with musket caps. I also have a black diamond and have no trouble with pyrodex pellets and musket caps but it would work with the 777 pellets I thought I could get an easier clean up.

Country Boy

Several people have recommended #11's as an ignition source, and I agree they will work - but I would like to add a couple of thoughts.  There are two grades of #11's, a regular #11 and #11 Mag - I would suggest for T7 to use the mag cap.  The #11 mag caps are actually hotter than musket caps but do not burn as long as a musket cap.

Another thing that will help with the ignition of T7 in a sidelock is to use T7-3f.  We use to use 2f and it works fine as long as the temperature is realtivly warm say 20 degrees and up, but when it gets really cold the metal of the gun stinks up a lot of the heat that a cap creates...  With the 2f you do not always get the powder out under the nipple so you also have to heat the void between the nipple and the powder... with 3f it is so fine it is much easier to get powder out under the nipple.

Also if you were to use #11's I would suggest the RWS Dynimt Nobel 1075+ cap (+ indicating magnum) it seems to be the hottest of all #11 mags.

Of course all this is a moot point if you hunt in warmer weather you should not have any problem at all...

OOPS - I did not read you last post about shooting pellets... different ball game.
Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

I guess I'm lucky because I get to shoot at the same range as Cecil from precision rifle. He was there working on some experimental loads, and I asked him about the 175 duplex load. He gave me 6 rounds to try. I started with 100 gr. loose pyrodex rs select, and proceded to shoot a group so small, we actually had to walk down range and make sure that there were 3 holes in one ragged hole! Thinking it was a fluke, I repeated with 3 more rounds, and the group was just a little larger. I think nerves got to me, because some other blackpowder shooters came over to watch. I have harvested 5 deer with this load; the longest at 166 yards. Only one deer went further than 50 yds. The 195 works for me over 105 gr. loose 3f t-7. Don't take my word as gospel, because like any rifle, yours may or may not like them, but give them a hard look... they are worth the money.
