Marlin 30AS vs. 336
« on: April 09, 2007, 04:47:40 PM »
What is the difference between the two? Can I order a better replacement stock for the cheap 30AS?  Can I expect good group with the new lever revoultion ammo since it was meant for the longer XLS barrel?

I have a 30AW.  I did a trigger smoothing on it and now it shoots sub inch 100 yard groups regularly with Federal Premium ammo.  Put next to a 336 the finish on the barrel is more matte on the 30AW, but the receiver and lever are identical.  My 30AW has a gold trigger, and the stock, although not walnut, looks just as good.  Since mine has been shot some the action is smooth as they get.  I have seen aftermarket stocks for 336 from a number of sources in walnut and synthetic, so I am sure you can find one.

In gun stores I have seen 30s sell for as much, and in one case more than similar 336s.

I hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.
