I went on my first guided hunt last year. I hunted with CAMP 5 OUTFITTERS in central California for Wild Boar.
Our guide carried a 7mm Rem. Mag. when we began our stalk on the pigs. A lot of their hunting area is rolling hills with brushing ravines or gullys, some is more lush w/quite a bit of trees. Our guide said he carries his rifle in case we have to go in the brush after a pig that has been shot or if a client has wounded a pig and asks for help finishing it off.
After a classic spot and stalk my hunting buddy shot a nice pig @ 25 yards w/a .35 Rem. Contender pistol & factory Federal 200 grn round nose ammo. At the shot, the pig ran about 20 yards and made it into a brushy ravine. Of course it's starting to get dark and gets even darker as we go into the brush to find the pig. To make a long 'exciting' story shorter, we found my buddies pig dead after it went approx. 50 yards, from the place it was shot. I would NOT want to be a guide going into the brush after a shot (possibly wounded and mad) pig as it's getting dark, w/o any firearm!!
We had no problem w/our guide carrying a gun, in fact I would have thought it a bad idea for him not to have one!! I think a guide should show you a good experience in their hunting area, be able to find animals that you are there to hunt, hopefully get you w/in range for a shot (provided you are physically able to do what it takes), if you are successful in shooting your target animal - they should help you retrive and process that animal, and try to get you home safely and healthy.
So, if they or you get attacked by this animal, and they could have easily prevented this if they would have had a firearm, but didn't because they chose or are prevented from carrying a firearm - that guide/outfit is not doing their "job" properly. Some people may feel differently, this is just my opinion.
By the way if you want to hunt Wild Boar and can make it to the central California area, I highly recommend CAMP 5 OUTFITTERS!! They own or lease access to over 40,000 acres of land, farm barley on a lot of it (great food source / attraction for the pigs), and just flat have a LOT of pigs! My hunting buddy shot a 200 lb. black sow and I shot a 175 lb. black boar, and we were both using handguns. If we would have been hunting with scoped rifles, we both could have easily had 200+ lb. boars w/ 2+" of exposed tusks!
Good Hunting, Del
