I finally located the new Burris Fast Fire reflex sight. I jerry rigged the Piccatini mount base to replace the rear sight on my 6" AMT automag in .22 WMR. The sight weighs a whopping nine tenths of an ounce and with the sight mounted my AMT still fits the same holster. The red dot was very bright in the late afternoon sun. It was not a clean round dot but had a lot of halo and raggedness. Still, my accuracy was MUCH better than with the open iron sights. Perhaps, twenty years ago, I could have gotten equal accuracy with the irons but now, I was very pleased with my groups.
I just grabbed a few boxes of this and that for ammo and set up a six bull target at 25 paces. Not having a bench rest I rested over the hood of my truck, reasonably steady but nothing like a Ranson Rest. I fired at least two groups of five shots with each type of ammo and got the following groups.
CCI +V 30 gr. HP--1.5",1.6" and 1.8"
Rem 33 gr. V-max--1.0", 1.0", and 1.6"
CCI maxiMag 40 gr. HP--1.4" and 2.0"
Fiocchi 40 gr. SP--0.9" and 1.9"
Fiocchi 40 gr. HP--1.0" and 2.3"
I can't explain the wide disparity of groups from any one ammo type. The Fiocchi gave me both the smallest and largest groups of the day. I can only say that I was pretty shaky and no doubt let a few shots get away from me. Still, when 2.3" is the largest of twelve five shot groups with five different types of ammo, I feel pretty good about my pistol and about the burris sight.
I forgot to take my Pro Chrono but have previously chronographed all but the Fiocchi ammo. My impression was that both the report and the recoil of the Fiocchi seemed less than CCI or Remington but I'll check that out the next chance I get.
