Converting a Savage 93G 22 Mag. to a Hornet
« on: March 24, 2007, 03:14:35 PM »
I have a Savage 93G heavy barrel that has a 1 in 16 twist and was wondering if it would be possible to convert it to a 22 Hornet? I know that a rimfire is different but I want something that has more power then a 22 Magnum. If it could be done how hard or expensive would something like that cost?    Thank's, Jack

Get a new rifle, or try some of the new ammo out there.

Get a Model 40 Hornet with the Accutrigger.

Keep the Magnum. Just try different ammo till you find something it really likes.
The new speedy lightweight pills are good.

Then you can have the best of both Worlds.

You won't regret it.

cheers,
Sean

I appreciate the replies , but what I was wondering since the gun has a 1 in 16 twist, Plus the Accra trigger. How hard would it be to re-chamber  to a Hornet? I have tried about 6 different types of ammo and while most are good at 50 yards with 1/2" groups it falls off badly at 100 yards and just does not have enough power  and accuracy at that range  with even just a very light wind really scatters the groups. Even the new v-max 30 grain from CCI out at 100 yards still is to wind sensitive.
The reason I didn't buy a Hornet  at first was because the ammo was so high and it was a little harder to hand load , but now it seems that it has made a come back and with the Lil gun powder  and the 35 gr. V- Max its real good out to 200 yards and the velocity is around 3100 fps. That is what I think is a better deal. Anyway thanks  again for the replies.                                         Jack

If you want the Hornet, sell the .22 mag and get one. It would be way cheaper and safer too.

Well today I talked to a local gunsmith, he said that it would be possible to re-chamber, but the cost would be way more then it would be worth and to just buy a new rifle would be the best way to go.. The labor costs are out of sight  for a budget type rifle. So i guess I'll be selling it and my sons 22 Mag. in Marlin 925M as soon as I have posted enough times. Thanks for the replies.                     Jack
