45/410 handloading ...and the 450 Mongo??
« on: March 30, 2007, 04:02:28 AM »
Ok this borders from centerfire and shotgun handloading I guess, but I will post my question here as it pertains more to slugs and sabots. I have a ton of fun loading for my centerfires, but handloading for a shotgun I am ignorant and have never loaded for one.
So I am in need of some clear answers.
I have seen many 45/410 shotguns, but I know there is a little slop in the barrel for a 410 if a person is shooting 45 Colts through it.
So what diameter/caliber are both of these types of barrels, 410.... and the 45/410?
And the 450 Mongo.... any info here? I have read it's 444 Marlin brass foreformed, but thats about all I got ???
What dies would one use when trying this out, 444Marlin?
Would these work with 410 Brass cases to load slugs?
What is the cheapest way to load brass cased 410 shells? Is there a centerfire die set that you could use, if only loading slugs and sabots for it?

Some time back i tried this with the brass 2 1/2' 410 cases , what i did was used my 45LC die to do a kinda neck sizing of the brass and loaded a 250 grain cast colt bullet just like i would for the colt , while it did help fill the void in the 410 / 45colt chamber it did not inprove the group size enough to warrent the exrra work that was involved .

Your milage may very , but i don't think that the whole concept of a duel use chamber was ever a good idea , just to much slop in the chamber .

Was this with a NEF Survivor 45/410 barrel?  I was just thinking about experimenting with a smooth bore 410. So a 45 Colt die worked though...
What size diameter bullet would be safe in a regular 410 barrel?
I realize this could make for disaster is a person loaded full case capacity, but what is some safe load data for this?

Edit: I found a couple interesting reads with some pretty goods info...

This was in a TC combo 45LC / 410 barrel and i was using the 250gr. RNFP in .452 , never tried it with a standard 410 barrel .

Aaron.
I been there done that DONT do it!.
The .410 case for one thing have a weak head they dont take the pressure in the larger chamber with out the proper chamber support.
The .410 case has a head diameter of .471" and the .45-70 has a head diameter of .500"
The rim diameter of a brass or steel .410 case is.531" and the .45/70 is .600" the rim thickness of the .410 is .039 and it's folded, the .45-70 is .070 thick, so your also fighting head space.
The .45-70 case is 2.1" long and the .410 case is 2.730 long.
The bore -grove diameter in the .45-70- is .450/.458. the .410 is .410 or so.
I know they do it but it's not a good idea Aaron.

Great info Kurt, thank you.
I was mostly curious as I keep reading about it, but people give no REAL information on this.
And I have yet to see any guidelines on the 450 Mongo in any of my reloading manuels on it  :-\
Looks like more slop than I want to get into.

After reading your post again I see you said 450 mongo I never heard of that one, some how I had it in my head it was a .45-70.
So disregard what I said if it is not the .45-70 case, even so the brass Shot shell case will not take much pressure.
