steel shot in savage 311

hello, i have 2 savage 311's...20 ga with 28 full chokes....i know i cant shoot steel in this gun because of the full  choke but i have a 311 12 ga that was (guessing) made in the 60's that has 28 in ic and mod choke..........i have an ithaca 37 that i got new in 1975 or so.......its does great with steel shot in its mod choke.......i would think the steel in this 311 12 ga would be ok to shoot steel shot out of...what do the experts think?........wondering because i like hunting with this gun and a few places i hunt,  steel shot is reguired for any game........rabbits and squirrels...thanks mack

It would be VERY UNWISE to shoot steel in your 311 PERIOD. No one recommends shooting steel in older fixed choke guns as they were never designed for it. True the more open the choke the less problem there but the barrel steel is just not intended for it. They are yours to do as you please with but if mine I'd not.
