Well I have to put in my .02 here as well.  I have thought off and on about getting one, but it ALWAYS goes back to the years I had to shoot my M-16  (A1 model), left handed, while in Uncle Sams service :(.  I learned to hate that rifle >:(, if not the hot brass going down my neck :o, to the "twaaaannnggg" soound it made in the stock during every shot.

I've shot some variations of the A2 since then, but overall the rifle has never appealed to me as a sporting arm.  Do I call it a terrorist weapon?  Not at all, nor do I consider it an assault weapon.  I do not like the ergonomics of it nor did I like carrying it on a sling with the magazine sticking in my back.

Would it be great for getting doubles on varmints?  You bet.  But to me it's not my choice to hunt with.  For plinking, I prefer a semi auto 22.

Dumbo's comment has had zero affect on my thoughts on buying one.

So a short answer is NO.  Just my opinion, that I have a right ot express.  By the way, Zumbo does have a right to express HIS opinion as well, just as much as you and I, BUT with our voiced opinions we sometimes have to suffer consequences.  I'm not quite sure he was ready for the backlash he got.  It's kinda like a white politician going to an NAACP meeting and using the "N" word and saying they're all slaves anyway.  That would be the last speech of his career, and rightly so.  So it is with Zumbo.

He basically used the "T" word in association with thousands of people that DO like them for something other than lamps, and he will pay his price for making it public.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

Yep, I don't give a hoot what kind of guns people like & they should not care what kind of guns I like. But to label a gun or to label
the user of a gun is something totally different.

It has added motivation.  I've been looking at either an AR or an FN-FAL, but I keep getting interrupted by the occasional .32 J frame, Firestar, or BSA Martini. ::)

But I'm going to have to focus soon, as I expect we'll soon face a major push for a new AWB.

First time I was ever able to qualify Sharpshooter (& later Expert) was with the M16A1 while in ROTC; I just couldn't get my act together earlier with the M14 when I was active duty Navy.   Since then, I dropped my first antelope using a (borrowed) AR.

If I do go for the AR instead of the FNFAL, I wouldn't mind assembling an A1 look-alike if I can find the old delta gaurds.

In all honesty, that is one of the reasons I have held off so far.  For what a good AR-style costs I could have bought all three of my Marlins (used but in great shape) and had serious money left over.  Or I could have purchased a couple of good bolt guns, which I have done several times over, with money left over.

Still, I suspect the day will come, the question is .223 for fun or larger for serious scenarios and hunting because I can...

Picked up my AR 15 Saturday. Now I have to go to the range and blow up some rounds.  ;D

WTG Redhawk. Make sure you wear black clothing and a black mask when sighting in that terrorist weapon.   ;D LOL

Man, sure wish I had one too, but as was mentioned, just a bit expensive for just one gun. Let us know how it works out.

for now we all have the right to voice what we think ! but with that is the obligation to think before one  speaks !
and if one fails to think , then the the rest of us may well not listen , or take a bit farther along and maybe not buy from those who allow him to be on tv or at shows etc.
he is in the same boat with REBA and the DIXIE CHICKS , they forgot that with out US they sing and preach to empty seats ! oh yea that hanoi jane too !
if WAR is the mother of invention , then it stands to reason that all our sporting arms have a tie with some war or conflict ! ( the slide action rifle may be a streach )
the bow , the knife, the spear  and the gun !
If he can't afford to up grade , then he should not be jelous of those who can afford to , if he was nice someone might let him shoot one !

If ya can see it ya can hit it !

I don't like the ARs, but I have two mini-14s.  This article makes me want a Mini-30 or two.

Yea life is funny, I really liked the m-14, carried it on guard duty at my first duty assignment.  To me, THAT was a rifle.  Funny thing, I'm not sure I want one of those now either.  Just gettn old I guess.

I am right eye dominant, didn't know that till I was about 35, and since I am lefthanded, I'm pretty ambidexterious as well.  Looking back, I might have done better just shooting the darned thing right handed.  Oh, well, such is life.

Hmmmm....I bet I've had 6 or 8 in the last 20 years or so.  Colt (H-Bar, Competition Match), RRA National match (I liked the green stock set), oh, and a pre-ban Colt SP-1 lite weight and who knows what else.  I'm down to a bushy vaeminter and a CAR H-Bar A-3 upper....and I also hate the damn TWANG everytime I fire it...but...I'll keep'er.   BTW, I'm passionate about mini-14's too but they seem to come and go........  Had an HK SL-8 too...but...couldn't hit crap with it and the stock screws (of which there were many) kept comming loose......kind a cool looking though...so...will find another I'm sure.

Anyway...screw Zumbo........

My start with AR's and other military semi auto rifles began in the 1980's when politicians stated that there was no need of civilians owning these types of guns.  I went right out and started to buy pistols, shotguns, and rifles that politicians stated had no sporting and hunting uses.  I already owned three AR type rifles before Zumbo overloaded his mouth, and I shot two deer during this last season with a 308cal AR type rifle.  I just wentout last week and bought two HK 91 type rifles to add to my black rifle collection.  I might shoot a deer with one of these rifles also.  Hopefully the rifle will scare off all those real hunters so there will be more for me, Ha ha ha! ;D

Actually bought an HK91 the day after daddy Bush banned the import in the 80s (I could not find a AUG quickly).

Then went thru several AR-15s over the years, just lately the mood in Congress influenced me to hold an AR again. So a 24" DPMS in 308 is now mine.

The HK was not a target rig but all my ARs have been tack drivers.  The 24" UltraMatch Olympic AR-15 impressed our local benchrest shooters and the DPMS is looking promising enough to get their attention also.  Just feed 'em good ammo tailored to what they like!

Spares are needed if one is calling it a survival rig, not to mention lots of ammo it likes.  The case of surplus .308 I hold ain't paper target material but is works.....

Can't speak Highly enough about those HK 91's..
That is a fine weapon. Found a bunch of 20 round Mags.
recently for about 5 bucks a piece. They are Aluminum/alloy
but they work perfectly... The NATO ammo from Portugal
is as accurate as any ammo I have ever fired.. Even MATCH
grade stuff. If you find any, Snap it up..

Flipped the channel over to Spirit of the Wild the other night and saw the host at the range with Jim Zumbo, and Zumbo was firing an AR-15 style rifle.  I didn't see the whole piece, but I presume The Nuge was showing Jim how great ARs are and Zumbo was trying to mollify the large number of people he upset.  Anybody catch the whole thing?

Has any one here other than me ever said something and instantly knew you had screwed up !!!
He screwed up but we may need to re-think the situation before we out cast him too far...
He could be a lethal weapon for the Anti's so we may not want to push him totally out of the nest..
I know many soldiers who have said far worst about those weapons...

I noticed on the Outdoor Channel that the Walker Game Ear people are still using Zumbo on one of their advertisements.

It's the advertisement where Zumbo shoots, then turns to the camera and says, "I'm Jim Zumbo, and I use the Walker Game Ear."

Should I not buy anything from Walker Game Ear now? I'll answer that:

I'm not buying anything from them until they get rid of Zumbo.

I saw the show and it had the flavor of Ted trying to educate JIM on AR's and take him to the woodshed at the same time. Jim really screwed up by his word choice and the possible juice it gave the naive anti gun lobby.  However one thing was confusing to me.  At the end of the show Ted responded to JIM when he said, " don't defend anything, promote, buy more guns!)  I have no problem with where my allegiance lies and it is with protecting the 2ND amendment and our firearms!  I am an NRA member.  It makes no sense to me to punish law abiding citizens the bad guys will still have guns.
However sometimes we as a group may get a little carried away myself included.  I think Jim Zumbo has been a longtime advocate of the hunter and outdoor life style, one of us.  I could hear my dad, who loved hunting, say, " what do you need that kind of rifle for?"  He didn't mean no one else should have one he just didn't want to leave his old trusty Remington bolt action at home.  He also served in WWII and most military weapons, old and new, brought back very bad memories.  Like praying with his best friend hit by artillery while they both knew he wasn't going to make it.  It was my father's choice as to how and what he used to hunt,  he didn't want to take that away from someone he just had a different opinion.
Hey Jim, really screwed up we all do and it's what we do after we screw up that defines who we are!  Dad taught me that at a very young age.  I for one am not ready to throw Jim  Zumbo to the Wolves just yet like many of his sponsors have done.  I want to see how he recovers and if the last 40 years tell me anything I bet he does.  He just loves our sport too much!  But Jim please talk to your hunting buddies next time you write on a touchy subject before you have to pull both of you hunting boots out of you mouth!      Buckfever

I have enjoyed Zumbos shows for quite a while. I was disappointed by his comments about ARs. I for one enjoyed the show with Ted Nugent. I have messed up enough times in my life to allow the same from another. If Jim had adament about his position, I would have let him go. I believe as he said on the show that it was just an ignorant mistake. He wants to make it right, and not just to get paid for making a TV show. I understand being angry with him after his AR comments, but I would hope that we are big enough men not to ruin one of our own. I believe he still has something to offer to the sports he loves. But it is a good lesson to others and maybe a lesson to all of us about our solidarity.

OK, I'll bend a little and give Zumbo a +1 for the open letter he wrote to the Senate in regards to Carl Levine using Zumbo's blog against us law abiding citizens. The following is a Cut & Paste that I got from the Ruger Forum which was originally posted by Ruger Forum member Tim Perkins. Thank you Tim. I'm still not completely won over yet, though

******************************************************************
******************************************************************
JIM ZUMBO
March 28, 2007

An Open Letter to the
United States Senate

Dear Honorable Ladies and Gentlemen:

It recently came to my attention that one of your colleagues, Michigan Sen. Carl Levin, has chosen to attack firearms owners using remarks I wrote in mid-February as his launch pad. As you probably know, Sen. Levin has been making anti-gun speeches every week for the past eight years because of a promise he made to the Economic Club of Detroit in May 1999.

Mr. Levin has an agenda, and he should have spoken to me before using my name in one of his speeches, especially since his remarks were entered into the Congressional Record. I would like my remarks here entered into the Congressional Record as well.

Sen. Levin is only one of 16 members of the Senate to vote against the Vitter Amendment to the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act. This amendment prohibits the confiscation of a privately-owned firearm during an emergency or major disaster when possession of that gun is not prohibited under state or federal law.

Eighty-four senators voted for that amendment, inspired by the egregious confiscation of firearms from the citizens of New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina in the summer of 2005. Those seizures, you will recall, led the Second Amendment Foundation and National Rifle Association to join in a landmark civil rights lawsuit in federal court that brought the confiscations to an abrupt end.

The taking of private property without warrant or probable cause – even firearms – was considered an outrage by millions of American citizens, and yet Sen. Levin joined 15 of his colleagues in voting against this measure. It is no small wonder that Sen. Levin gets an “F” rating from gun rights organizations. He would have American citizens disarmed and left defenseless at a time when they need their firearms the most, when social order collapses into anarchy and protecting one’s self and one’s family is not simply a right and responsibility, it becomes a necessity.

That in mind, Sen. Levin must know that almost immediately after I wrote those remarks, I recanted and apologized to the millions of Americans who lawfully and responsibly own, compete with and hunt with semi-automatic rifles. I took a “crash course” on these firearms and visited with my good friend Ted Nugent on his ranch in Texas, where I personally shot an AR-15 and educated myself with these firearms.

Some of us learn from our mistakes, others keep making them. Legislation to which Sen. Levin alluded, HR 1022, would renew the ban on so-called “assault weapons,” and dangerously expand it to encompass far more perfectly legal firearms. For the Congress of the United States to even consider such legislation is an affront to every law-abiding firearms owner in this country.

This legislation that Sen. Levin appears to endorse is written so broadly as outlaw not only firearms, but accessories, including a folding stock for a Ruger rifle. As I understand the language of this bill, it could ultimately take away my timeworn and cherished hunting rifles and shotguns – firearms I hope to one day pass on to my grandchildren – as well as millions of identical and similar firearms owned by other American citizens.

It is clear to me that the supporters of this legislation don’t want to stop criminals. They want to invent new ones out of people like me, and many of you, and your constituents, friends, neighbors and members of your families. They will do anything they can, go to any extremes they believe necessary, to make it impossible for more and more American citizens to legally own any firearm.

In his final paragraph, Senator Levin misrepresents what I said. I never spoke in favor of a general assault weapons ban. Again, I immediately apologized for my blog statement that was exclusively directed toward hunting and not gun ownership.

I will not allow my name to be associated with this kind of attack on the Second Amendment rights of my fellow citizens.

A few weeks ago, in a letter to Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, I promised to educate my fellow hunters about this insidious legislation “even if I have to visit every hunting camp and climb into every duck blind and deer stand in this country to get it done.”

I will amend that to add that I will bring my effort to Capitol Hill if necessary, even if I have to knock on every door and camp in every office of the United States Senate. In promoting this ban, the Hon. Carl Levin does not speak for me, or anybody I know.

Sincerely,

James Zumbo
Cody, Wyoming

We do all make mistakes , and all pay for them on the level we make them !
He is in the lime light and should be held to a higher standard !
I don't watch Jane f. ( viet nam )or Reba ( the gun buy back ) or  BILL O'REILY on fox news talk and his saying that ccw's should not be allowed in large cities , but were ok in open spaces since help was not near . What was he thinking ? has he called for a policeman in a city lately ? how fast is fast ? I don't think the police are obligated to be everywhere all the time in any city , for the police to give 100% protection one would have to be with each of us all the time ! SORRY BILL NO SPIN !
And that nice letter JZ wrote to congress , did he admit he was spouting off about something he knew little about since he had to be educated on the ar ?
Please pick a leader with great care and a spokesman that knows when to keep his mouth shut !
If ya can see it ya can hit it !
