30-30 rechamber
« on: March 31, 2007, 01:59:18 PM »
Have always had a thing for 30-40 Krags,  but many are shot out, including mine. Was told by a company that does such things that rechambering a 30-30 handi-rifle to the Krag is not only feasible, but had been done.  All case dimensions for the 30-40 are larger than the 30-30 to begin with.

I already reload for the Krag, just would be neat for something a little different.

Thoughts?

There are several members here with 30-40 Krag Handi rifles that were rechambered from 30-30. I like the 30-30, but if I want more performance, the .308 or 30-06 makes more sense, but different strokes, what ever floats your boat! ;)

I think MT3030 has done a 30-30 to 30-40 Krag rechamber.

Thanks, my first rifle was a Krag handed down through the family so I've just always liked having one around. Not worried about the performance plus or minus compared to 308's etc. Just neat to have. If anyone would have a recommendation as to who to have actually do the work, I'm all ears. Would prefer to have someone that actually did it before.

Wayne York of Orgegunsmithing has done several rechambers and rebores for me and several other members here, he's very knowledgable about H&R/NEFs.

I know whatcha mean about favorites, he's done a .405 Winchester, 35 Remington, 280 Improved and .338-06 A-Square for me, the .405 and 35 aren't exactly high performance calibers, but they are unique and fun to have, a little different from the run of the mill cartridges. ;)

Yep. I have had three H&R/NEFs and one Savage 219 30-30s rechambered to the 30-40. Last one I used an early SB2 so I could have the pre-micro groove cut rifling. Capital Sporting Goods in Helena (406/443-2978) did the job for $100.00, which seems to be about the going price all over.
