Got the Chronograph Blues
« on: March 25, 2007, 05:11:12 PM »
Hey guys.  I killed my chronograph today when a sabot from my 50 caliber LYMAN Mustang hit the display screen 15 feet from the muzzle.  If you use a chrono with sabboted bullets, it might be a real good idea to mount some kind of plexiglass screen in front of the unit.  Oh well, live and learn.

Skeeter,

If it is a chrony go to their website http://www.shootingchrony.com/ and they have a trade in for shot chronographs.

That plastic has amazing force until it slows down.  I dented a friend's chrono when the wood block I had taped across the front slipped and the sabot caught the top of the frame.
Plexiglass or plywood will work fine as a blocker.

Another tip, forget the metal guide rods on the screen.  You can guarantee the bullet will go through them but where will the sabot go?  Hit one of them and bye bye sensor block.
My suggestion is to substitute uncooked spaghetti strands.  You can't put the sky screens on them, but if you don't neeed the screens they work great for guiding your shot without risking a hit.

Hey Andy, I like the spaghetti option!  Will definitely have a plexiglass shield on the next chrono.  Am planning to use 1/8" wood dowels - partially cut through - to mount the screens.

Chopsticks work great too and they will hold up the sky screens.
