walther p22 pistol

ive been looking at buying one of the newer walther p22 auto pistols.the weight and feel is what im looking for.i know its plastic and prob wont have a great resale value in comeing years.what i need to know is wether its accurate and reliable and what they are worth on the used gun market.id prefer the shorter model for carrying ease. anybody have any experience with these guns?

 I bought one a year or so ago and have taken it to the range a couple times. I have enjoyed it and it often is on my side when I am scouting or exploring hunting land. It is not a target pistol but I can hit what I am aiming at with it and mine atleast seems to feed most everything I feed it, I can't recall a jam. I have heard they dont like remington ammo. As for resale value, prices continue to go up on them. Mine is the 5 inch version by the way. Hope this helps.

I have had one for a couple of years now. Not the most accurate 22 pistol I've ever shot but it's lot of fun when just plinking. I haven't found any ammo that it won't shoot. Remington Golden Bullets, Winchester, Federal, Blaser, CCI; whatever I feed it, it shoots it. Haven't seen any secondhand ones. My local dealer sells quite a few, but never seems to get one back.

I've had one for about 18 months.  Fun, light little pistol.  The P22 is not as well-designed, engineered or manufactured as other .22 semiauto's in that price range.  It is harder to shoot accurately.  Mine wanted to eat the zinc alloy slide until I disassembled it and polished the trigger bar ears and did some other tweaking.  If it were a first .22 semi-auto, I'd get a Ruger, Buck Mark or S&W 22A before I bought a P22.  The P22 is a good second or third gun in a collection, not the first.  Having only a P22 is like a coworker years ago who took his car in for repairs.  After a month of "it will be ready next week" and not being ready he told the dealer he really needed the car.  The response was "you mean you own a Fiat as your only car?"

hey guys thanks for the input on the walther.i have a couple ruger autos, a buckmark and a s&w 41 so i know what a goodun shoots like.yuall are sayin mabey the walther is not too accurate?i need a pistol that willat least hit a 4 in circle at 30 yrds. is the walther known for at least this much accuracy?if not then im prob not interested in it, especially at 399$ as is what its offered at in my local. if it wont ill just git another 4 inch ruger cuz i know it will do it.keep me posted, all info is appreciated.

$399 seems steep for a P22, but that may be close to the price I've seen in some of the local gun shops.  I'm not sure, based on my experience with the P22, I'd pay that for an SP22.  The Walther accuracy, like any handgun, has more to do with the shooter than the pistol.  The short sight radius, small size and light weight magnify any shooting flaw.  The adjustments on the rear (plastic) sight are not precise.  Elevation is controlled by changing the front sight.  Relatively easy to do and you get three with the pistol.  I couldn't do 4" groups at 30 yards, consistently, with the P22.  This has as much to do with my shooting ability as with the pistol.  The P22 is a 3/4 scale model of the P99.  I don't think it was intended to be a target pistol.

I got my wife a P22 last year, Bi-tone for $318 out the door.  At first it had its problems.  It had issues with reliable feeding.  We quit using Remington Bulk pack and tried PMC Zappers with great success, no more failures.  Also, the safety lever would work down, and engage.  It started out happeneing once every few mags, but soon it happened during every mag.  I followed a repair guide on rimfire central, you remove the safety lever, and file it down and put it back on.  Works great now, runs 100% and the safety has not engaged once since.  Accuracy is pretty good considering how it is small, has a short sight radius, and is lightweight.  It gets a lot of use now, and goes to the range with us every time we go.

I have had my p22 for about 6 months, it is a blast too shoot.  I am not great with a hand gun so the 30 yards is something that I, my self, would not even try.  You say you have a Buckmark!!  If so you will not like the p22 I wish I would have bought that instead of the Walther.  The gun is so light that is really hard to keep a good group with.  I usually shoot out to bout 20 yards with it other then that it is about the same as a sling shoot.  But if you do get one here is a site you may want to take a look at.  May be it can be a sticky here too!!

im glad i got yualls input on this, i guess i was hopeing for the price they were asking id get what is basically a plastic pocket pistol that would possibly be able to be pushed in to survival or hunting duties in a pinch.guess i shoud of known better. not that i wouldnt pik one up if it was in the 225$ range or so.i tend to judge everything by how bad i need it and resale value.im goin to the big show in tulsa next month and ill see what they are bringing there and what the boys say about them

I agree with most everyone else in this case.  I'm happy to keep mine in a 4 inch group at 10 yards.  (on a good day.)  But then again, I didn't get it as a target pistol.  My MKII slab side is for that.  I got it to put a can on the end of it.  Now that is fun!  I shoot it more than the rest of my guns combined.  Nothing better than to step out in the back yard and not have anyone know you are shooting.  (Don't worry, I'm out in the country so my neighbors aren't that close and I'm not breaking any laws.)
